Smockizzy
An exclusive interview with Smockizzy aka Dat Trap boy from the east.
Interviewed by Eugene chukwudi.
What's your name?
Smockizzy: My names are Akanisi Ofonna Samuel.
What's your stage name?
Smockizzy: Smockizzy aka Trap boy from the east
What inspired your passion for music and who has been there supporting you from the beginning?
Smockizzy: Well I must say I never understood I was made for this ( music) but growing up I had music lovers around me so I listened to some musics and watched mum compose gospel choruses and nursery poems until it was like I woke up and it was me in ss1 writing songs and choruses in every back cover of my note book. I was surprised that I could do such. I began trying to get the right tune and a better composed song and from then i noticed my life generalIy inspired me to express myself through music . I saw a lot of hard times and I guessed i loved how soothing music can heal and when I discovered I was a good composer I kept it burning and the passion never left because I mingled with a clique of boys who loved and followed music and music artist just the way I could..so I kept seeing myself being those young musicians we admire . As for who has been there supporting, it was basically my mum(God bless her soul) was the only one who saw sense in it immediately she discovered I could compose well ( I was a bad vocalist during prayer sessions at home so it wasn't sane to say I wanted to do music until she saw what I could do as a 14yr old over a recorded chorus I composed). She gave me money for my 1st song after I made it for an award finals in Lagos all the way from the east back in 2012 as best upcoming south east at top NAIJA music awards. Then the support never stopped even now she is in a better place I feel it.
Is music really hard?
Smockizzy: Hahaha...this is weird man. I expect you to already know but well I am not surprised because i used to feel it was easy and once you perfect your talent you are making it already. But I have been in this since 2012 and at every time I think am ready to blow I discover I am not even close to what I should be and kept rebranding till 2015. I was sure I knew my sound and what I was putting out to the people and how I want to pass my messages that's my style. You see I have in this short things I have said highlighted some basics which most acts don't go through and go viral to fade out immediately. Music as a career is just like any other career let's say civil service, you keep climbing in levels in the Civil service right? Go on courses to be considered for promotion right? That's the equivalent of finding your sound, steadily working on your talent to refine out the best parts of yourself. Mind you you will acquire and learn different sides of your talent but its for you to choose the best and how you do that is taking the one that makes you stand out so you don't look and sound like anyone that way you will be on course to take over someday Lol. Its not still assured even after doing all these because you only did your homework but there are other players and factors in the game that will decide how far you go too. So music is a very complex career more complex than anyone you follow through graduating from school with a certain certificate and grade. But with Grace from the supreme (God) your journey to the top will always be simplified.
Have you had any challenges on releasing your single?
Smockizzy: I have always had a hurdle whenever I want to put out a single.
It comes in different ways. I guess it happens to everyone at everyone's stage it only looks different as you climb.
What are those challenges so far?
Smockizzy: Well, aside always being short of cash to handle projects And manoeuvring to get things done. Most challenges comes just like that. May be someone pulling out from the team i have lined up to help in handling a project. Trust issues always a problem. You don't know who to trust that can handle the project given to him or her. Disappointment has always been the problem So it makes me be on my toes always. People in my inner circle always know I handle almost everything myself, you only choose to tag along and help me so when you want to pull out or sleep on me it will be clear to you I was already on it before you decided to Jonse. It tasks me to have an idea on everything. From beat production and how I want my instrumentatals to be, the designs (Album cover) and Videos. I don't just fully leave things for people because I have even at my involvements suffered serious heartbreaking disappointments. And then you understand you are O.Y.O (On Your Own) and you always gat s**t to lose as the artist.
We heard you have a lot of fans is that true?
Smockizzy: yaaas!!!, I am glad to finally and confidently say yes to this . I couldn't even believe that, to show you how well i have grown with my brand. They are called #Kizzings and the fan base is #KizzingsNation and now I have so many growing outside my home country Nigeria. I started accommodating them with the name "Kizzings Worldwide"
Where do you see your self in next five years?
smockizzy: I am sitting on top of the game in five years taking on the world challenges. I have a lot coming that once they start dropping five years is too long for it to happen even by God's grace
How would you go about accomplishing this?
Smockizzy: Well you know as you said i have a lot of following on Twitter, Instagram and even on Facebook now and when you get to this stage (when you are viewed as the next) you are observed closely by frenemies and those who think you are a competition. So I rather remain a mystery and let results speak than dish out any personal plans or tips.
From your experience in the entertainment industry what advice could you offer people looking to get where you are you today?
Smockizzy: Well, I will advice if you only see the glamour and decide to take up music as a career just quit now. You will be disappointed when you get in that it takes aside talent a lot to get and understand your quest in the game talk more of making it. You don't want to be up and down the next minute. Anyone can achieve viral status mostly with money but it can never last. But if you see you have it embedded in you as an undying passion I advice you forget anyone popping now and work on yourself. See It as starting off from Nursery one then trying to make it as a graduate from the university to start enjoying your career with the whole affluence and glamour( the one you see when you look at anyone popping right now). Its a process , be with God for his grace is all you need to jump classes and gain promotion for instance from nursery 2 to primary 2 as I illustrated earlier. Always be acquiring new knowledge too. That's all I can advice for now.
Apart from music do you have any other talent?
Smockizzy: Lol, many o
Please Can we know them?
Smockizzy: Acting, I have been doing this as a kid and up to secondary school. If I delve into movies now I will do exceptionally good with lead roles. Mum used to write plays and dramas around my role because i possess that quality to Decide through my acting how well the drama will turn out. I equally have a talent in writing. Writing motivational or inspiring stories or topics . The oratory. Once am in the right state mind I can talk you into something you don't even believe in before I started. Then I could have been playing soccer or hockey generally I have got talent for sports. Then a talent in creating things (innovation) . I take this part of me to fashion and I always love creating new styles and soon I will be floating a line from shoes to clothing. That's why you see me going on this haircut I call the #KizzingsHairtlstyle . I equally talented in branding /marketing of anything commercially viable. And so on. All these help me be a jack of all trade in my music . That's why people tend to be amazed how without nothing I am where I am. I thank God for he only compensated me with all these and made sure I discover music as my ultimate talent too.
As you have all these talents why do you prefer music or do you think that's where enough money is?
Smockizzy: Hahahah, well when I choose music I wasn't seeing the money in it yet. But I choose it because that's the only talent I have I can't second none. I can stand the best and take the top spot if it was to be a competition.
Thank God it's where money is in abundant so my family can know the boy ain't insane choosing this path. They will be like "oh ofonna was only visionary ever since"
Any last words for your fans?
Smockizzy: Kizzings" DONT SLEEP ON ME AM COMING THROUGH WITH A LOT YOU ALL WILL BE PROUD OF" and I only count on you guys to push these materials and my brand to the top.
