Court To Decide Nnamdi Kanu’s Fate Today

Court To Decide Nnamdi Kanu’s Fate Today

BY VICTOR · DECEMBER 1, 2016

Will Kalu come out victorious today?

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has appealed to its members and Biafrans to accept the outcome of today’s  court ruling on the bail application of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu to avoid unnecessary killing of unarmed civilians by security agents.

The group alleged that it was not expecting any thing good from the court because the president had ordered the judiciary not to release its leader, during his broadcast on December 30, 2015.

A statement by the Media and Publicity of IPOB, Mr. Emma Powerful, yesterday, urged every member and Biafrans to remain calm notwithstanding whether the ruling is in favour or against its leader, Kanu.

Fear in NYSC camp as female corps member dies mysteriously

Fear in NYSC camp as female corps member dies mysteriously

BY VICTOR · DECEMBER 1, 2016

Fear has gripped corps members at the Bayelsa State Orientation Camp at Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state following the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps, who reportedly died in a mysterious circumstance.

The female corps member, whose name was given as Miss Elechi Chiyerom, aged 27, was confirmed dead on Tuesday. She reportedly bled and vomitted  on arrival at the camp.

Elechi, a graduate of the Ignatius Azuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was confirmed dead about 9pm on Tuesday five days after arriving at the camp.

Some corps members claimed the deceased on arrival at the camp last Thursday looked “terribly sick” and could not participate in some opening sessions at the camp.

Some officials of the NYSC claimed that the development was a case of “non-disclosure” of state of health by the corps member.

It was learnt that a search on her hostel section showed signs of excessive bleeding with her clothing and sanitary pads soaked in blood.

It was also learnt that the deceased corps member reportedly relapsed into ill-health and was rushed to the sick bay of the camp at about 8pm on Tuesday.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The doctor at the NYSC camp’s clinic immediately referred her to the state-owned Diette-Koki Memorial Hospital in the Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital, where she was confirmed dead.”

Don't run away from your sexuality, don't shy away from who you are" - Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Tuesday, 29 November 2016

"Don't run away from your sexuality, don't shy away from who you are" - Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has given young aspiring actors and filmmakers, tips on how to make celebrity marriage work.

The mother of four, fondly called Omosexy was one of the panelists at the Innovation Warehouse, a mentorship programme for aspiring filmmakers and actors during the just concluded Africa International Film Festival in Lagos.

While fielding questions from the participants, one asked why there is a high rate of divorce in celebrity marriages. In response, Omotola said that for a marriage to work in the entertainment industry, partners must be of the same faith.

"They must believe in you. If you’re a Christian and you marry someone who is not born again then you are on your own. Your partner needs to be stronger than you. They are the ones getting the aftermath of your own action. Choose a partner who understands entertainment. Don’t choose your fan. Personally, I don’t believe in love at first sight. Pick someone who sees your heart, your soul, someone who sees the real you and not afraid to tell you about your flaws.

"Discipline is key. Everyone wants freedom but too much freedom is bad. Be disciplined. It’s better to be an enemy to a work partner than to your family. Learn to say No! We are like nurses and doctors in the industry because we can be called upon at anytime."

She also advised against giving in to advances to get movie roles.

"Sometimes you will get a role for giving yourself out but you won’t be able to retain it. If you become famous it will later hunt you. But don't run away from your sexuality, don't shy away from who you are, enjoy who you are, come on there but come out with substance."

Man U's Jose Mourinho to sign Chelsea's John Mikel Obi in January

Tuesday, 29 November 2016

Man U's Jose Mourinho to sign Chelsea's John Mikel Obi in January

The Sun UK newspapers has published a shocking report, saying Jose Mourinho intends to sign Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi in January.

Mourinho feels Mikel, who has a few months left in his Chelsea contact, will help improve Man U's midfield and is prepared to sign him in January when he knows he'll come cheap. Read the full report, after the cut.
Mikel, 29, has not played under new Stamford Bridge manager Antonio Conte and there are no plans to renew his contract which runs out this season.

Now the Man united boss is ready to take advantage with a cut-price New Year offer for the player the Red Devils thought they had signed ten years ago.

Mikel had just turned 19 when the Old Trafford outfit announced on their website that they had signed the teenager on a four-year contract from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo. The £4million transfer was done directly with the player and his club — bypassing his agents and he was even pictured in a United shirt. But Chelsea angrily claimed they had an agreement with the agents to buy him.

It was reported Obi started to get threatening phone calls and ended up having to take refuge in a safe hotel with a security guard.

He then went missing from Lyn amid stories he had been kidnapped.

The Nigerian midfielder had actually travelled to London where he went on Sky Sports TV to claim that he had been pressured into signing for United, something they denied, and he wanted to join the Blues.
The matter was resolved when Chelsea paid United £12m and Lyn £4m.

If the deal is successful, this will be the second time Mourinho will sign Obi, who he believes can play in a defensive midfield role in front of the back four.

He needs that type of player to give £89m Paul Pogba freedom to roam.

Ways To Break Your Child From Habits

Ways To Break Your Child From Habits

BY NONSO@RN

Here, experts weigh in on why these habits are harmful and offer their best tips for how to deal with your child’s behaviors.

1. Hanging onto the bottle
Switching from a bottle to a sippy cup is often one of the most challenging things for toddlers to do. Plus, drinking too much milk can cause your tot to skip meals and miss out on calcium-rich foods like leafy green vegetables, yogurt and cheese and may even lead to iron deficiency.

Of course, allowing your child to fall asleep with a bottle in his mouth can also lead to cavities and tooth decay.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends toddlers transition to a sippy cup by 15 months of age, but experts say the time to start introducing the sippy cup is around six months so that by the time they’re a year old, it’s gone for good.

“The truth is that they’ve satisfied most of their sucking needs by a year,” said Dr. Jane Scott, a pediatrician and neonatologist in Greenwood Village, Colorado, and author of “The Confident Parent: A Pediatrician’s Guide to Caring for Your Little One–Without Losing Your Joy, Your Mind, or Yourself.”

Some students we teach are not fit for medical schools shocking revelation from professor of surgery...

Shocking revelation from Professor of Surgery

— 29th November 2016

‘Some students we teach are not fit for medical schools, how they got there, I don’t know’

From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

In the world of today mostly where people dodder into a particular career but end up practicing in an entirely different field, a call has gone out to parents to desist from imposing choice career on their children.
Prof Gabriel Udeze Chianakwana made the call at the 2016 College Lecture of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus orgarnised in conjunction with the Directorate of International Collaboration and Linkages and Insight Africa-UK.
Chianakwana, a Professor of Surgery, who was one of the lead speakers, described medical education as a difficult task meant for those ready to pay the required price. Speaking on the topic “International and Intercultural Collaboration in Medical Education”, he lamented that some people and students alike see medicine as a status symbol.  He said those that run to the course for the mere pleasure of seeing the appellation of ‘Dr’ affixed to their names should better have a rethink.
He counseled parents not to force their children to read medicine because such situation according to him has bred unmitigated disaster into the medical profession.
According to him “the medical students must read to be a doctor while every doctor must strive to be a very good doctor. Some students we teach are not fit for medical schools, how they got there, I don’t know.  The faculties are not the best and we keep managing but for how long shall we keep managing?” he queried.
Prof. Chianakwana pointed out that there are so many cases of policy changes in Nigeria without continuity of any lofty programme at the change of any government.
He lamented that the quality of an educational system can’t exceed the quality of its teachers declaring that it is high time the right people are hired to teach.
He identified Discipline, Honesty, Integrity and Selflessness as key virtues required from every Nigerian irrespective of one’s position and made a strong case for the compulsory fixing of one year abroad programme for fresh medical students graduates in Nigeria.
Prof. Chianakwana counseled those in the medical school not to see their certificate as meal tickets
He regretted that today in Nigeria most bankers working as cashiers in several financial institutions never read accountancy, banking and finance and other related courses. He said some them read political science while some were medical students in the university.
It is the same story in the ecclesiastical fold where some parents even force their children into seminary schools so that the family will produce a priest not minding whether such people have the inner calling to go into the ministry or not.
Another lecturer, Dr. Edwin Nwobodo while speaking on the theme: “Medical Education in the 21st Century,” said there are new demands in the skills, attitude, knowledge in training and practice for the 21st century medical expert.
He said the era now calls for problem based learning which also requires new tools and ways of assessing the people and teaching the subject matter.
He noted that the 21st century skills should be activity-based, collaborative, creative, integrative and evaluative.
Nwobodo said that technology should be regarded as a powerful learning resource that can support the 21st century skills.  He said Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities should be made available in quantity and quality at schools to guarantee the opportunities for technology use in the classrooms.
He declared that Information Technology is the way to go for the medical education in the 21st century.
Dr Igwebuike Onyiora , Director,  International Collaboration and Linkages, an associate professor of Hematologic Pathology and Forensic Medicine  in a chat with the reporter said he got collaborators to be part of that interface with British and Nigerian universities in the area of education research and  career development.
He said the target of nurses this time around is to give them dual certification and career development so that the nurses can have the capacity, competence and certification to work both in Nigeria and anywhere in the world.
“Apart from that, we want to see how we can now design curriculum to suit our local needs and meet international standards, the reason we do college lecture every year and this is one of a kind. We got Insight Africa UK, an organization involved in education, research and career development in the versatile areas of life. They collaborate and interface with UK institutions and African universities,” he said.
Provost, College of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus, Prof. Alexander Nwafor, in a remark noted that the college lecture is important because of the essence of medical education and collaboration.
He said there are best practices which are standards anywhere in the world for which no institution should be in isolation anymore. He said the target is on changes in education in line with the realities and practice and declared that any education without practicability is a failure hence the need to equip the students with what has been done before and where those things can be taken further.
He said that collaboration makes peer review system possible and this not only enriches knowledge but broadens the horizon.
Mrs Ral Parkin of Insight Africa UK in a presentation said the medical students have been given a lifetime opportunity to explore linkage programmes and also benefit from the interface offered by the programme so that they can turn out as better equipped persons in the medical field for both individual benefits and the general positive growth of the Nigerian medical profession.

Dogara queries CBN’s regulation on collateral registry

Dogara queries CBN’s regulation on collateral registry

— 29th November 2016

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Monday stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cannot subvert the laws of the land under the pretext of promoting “sound financial system.”
Speaking at the public hearing organised by the House Committee on Commerce on “A Bill for an Act to Provide For Secured Transactions”, Dogara said the CBN made regulations for a collateral register, which may have overreached its powers.
Speaking on the secured transaction bill, Dogara said: “The bill, if passed into law, will align Nigeria’s secured transactions regime with international best practices since the existence of a modern collateral registry for movables is one of the indices indicated for better doing business ranking.
“It is, however, important to point out that the CBN in September 2014, issued the Collateral Registry Regulations, 2014. The CBN founded its authority for making the Regulations on Section 1(2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act No. 7 of 2007, which details the principal objectives of the Bank and the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, Cap B3 – LFN 2004 (BOFIA) (as amended).
“It claimed that S.57 of the BOFIA authorises the Governor of CBN to ‘make regulations to give full effect to the objects and objectives of the Act’ as well as those for the operation and control of all institutions under the supervision of the Central Bank.
“In May 2016, the CBN launched a modern online Collateral Registry with the support of the World Bank. The registry allows low-income people and small-scale entrepreneurs to secure loans against movable assets such as machinery, livestock and inventory.”
Dogara said the 2014 regulations, according to the CBN, were intended to “provide a regulatory framework for accessing credit secured with movable property, creation and perfection of security interests, and realisation of security interests in movables. “The main challenge, however, which the committee should examine  with its legal consultants is to determine the need for legislation in this area when the CBN seems to have covered the field by way of the 2014 Regulation.
“The CBN has also established the Registry online as already indicated above. Most of the provisions sought to be enacted in the Bill are already operational by way of CBN Regulations.
“The real possibility of conflict exists if the CBN Regulations and the current Bill, if passed, are allowed to exist side by side. The committee needs to determine whether the CBN overreached itself in proceeding by way of regulations instead of by legislation on this subject.
He questioned CBN’s capacity to do all it did as regards the registry.
“Is the CBN authorised to introduce all manner of laws under the broad pretext of promoting ‘a sound financial system’ in Nigeria and giving effect to the ‘objects and objectives’ of BOFIA? Is the CBN a legislative body or merely a regulatory body in the financial sector?
“We need to examine these issues constructively in such a manner that will ensure fidelity to law and ease of operations in the financial system.”
He said no matter how difficult the legislative process may be, “it does not give any agency of government the authority to subvert the law by proceeding to legislate directly by questionable and unauthorised regulations that go way beyond the enabling laws.”

PDP goes to court as Fayose insists on Justice Abang’s sack

… PDP goes to court as Fayose insists on Justice Abang’s sack

— 29th November 2016

From Wole Balogun, Ado-Ekiti and Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned Ondo State’s governorship election and has called for its cancellation, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of complicity.
A statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye described the election as a charade and not the true reflection of the will of the people of the state.
“INEC has graduated from inconclusive elections as seen in Kogi, Bayelsa, Osun, Imo, Nassarawa states, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and some other previous by-elections in the country to ‘advanced election rigging’, as was the case of Edo and Ondo states governorship election.
“It is common knowledge that the APC agents openly bought votes of the electorate in the full glare of security operatives who did nothing to prevent such dastardly violation of the electoral law.
“In view of the fact that the election was manipulated from the beginning to the end, we vehemently reject the results of the Saturday, November 26, 2016 governorship election in Ondo. We have instructed Jegede and the Ondo chapter of our party to proceed to the election petition tribunal to challenge the outcome of the poll. We call on the judiciary to redeem Nigeria’s image on this matter as we request for the cancellation of Ondo election.”
Elsewhere, factional PDP Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, attributed the party’s loss to impunity and lack of respect for the party’s constitution.
Ojougboh, who is of the  Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff faction, said this at a press conference, in Abuja, yesterday.
He traced the crisis in Ondo PDP to Mimiko’s return which consequently  led to a mass exodus of party stalwarts from the party.
Besides, he accused Mimiko of foisting Mr. Eyitayo Jegede on the PDP as its governorship candidate, “thereby deepening the rift in the party. All the PDP members, led by Olusola Oke left the PDP for him. In choosing a candidate to succeed him, he did not allow the PDP members to buy forms. He mainly anointed Jegede.
Ojougboh said the party could have also lost the entire South South if President (Goodluck) Jonathan does not hail from the region.
Meanwhile Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has described Federal High Court Abuja judge, Justice Okon Abang as “a cancer that is capable of destroying the Judiciary in Nigeria, if nothing is done to curb his excesses.”
The governor claimed Abang “is seeing his position as a judge, as a means of getting at anyone that is opposed to him. Just because I criticised him and called for his sack, based on his fraudulent practises, as established by the Court of Appeal, in its judgment on August 18, 2016 and November 24, 2016, he hurriedly granted an interlocutory order against me on a matter pending before another judge.”
Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor reiterated his call to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to save the Judiciary from Abang’s embarrassment by sending him out of the Bench.

Biafra: I won’t give up fight, vows Nnamdi Kanu

Biafra: I won’t give up fight, vows Nnamdi Kanu

BY VICTOR · NOVEMBER 28, 2016

Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra/Biafra television, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu has vowed never to betray Biafrans or abandon the fight for Biafra State.
He said he would continue to reject materials allegedly offered him to renounce Biafra struggle until victory for Biafrans was achieved.

Kanu who spoke through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejioffor said his prosecutors and persecutors have come with many strategies to trick him to sign off his quest for Biafra and regain his freedom which he rejected because of his love for the freedom of his people.
“I have been battling with forces of darkness both physically and spiritually since I was arrested. They came with many strategies just to trick me into signing off my quest for Biafra and gain my personal freedom. Little did they know that I am more intelligent and determined; I refused all their offers because the freedom of my people, Biafrans, is paramount to me and their freedom is the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu. The pains and agony of all Biafrans are the pains and agony of Kanu.”
“Prominent leaders, countries in the world and those who don’t have the videos of the killed Biafrans in their possession should go to YouTube and watch the heinous crime committed by the Nigeria Government and her security agencies against peaceful members of IPOB during peaceful rallies and demonstrations in all the Biafra cities of Aba, Onitsha, Owerri, Igweocha (Port Harcourt), Calabar, Uyo, Asaba, Enugu, Bayelsa and other numerous cities.
“The senseless killing of Biafrans is the senseless killing of Nnamdi Kanu. The cry of the Biafran youths is the cry of Nnamdi Kanu. The joblessness of Biafrans after university is the joblessness of Nnamdi Kanu. The impoverishment and subjugation of all Biafrans is the impoverishment and subjugation of Nnamdi Kanu. The child abuses of Biafran children by the Hausa/Fulani cattle headers is that of Nnamdi Kanu,” he stated.

Why PDP lost Ondo election – Fayose

Why PDP lost Ondo election – Fayose

November 27, 2016

Fayose and PDP governorship candidate Eyitayo Jegede at a rally on Thursday.

*Says INEC rigged Ondo election in advance for APC

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) connived with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other collaborators in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the Ondo Governorship election.

He said; “Just as I would have loved to congratulate the winner, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), because in every contest, there must be a winner and a loser, the role of INEC in awarding victory to him in the election left much to be desired.”

The governor in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayina, said INEC gave the APC victory in the election by deliberately replacing the name of Mr Eyitayo Jegede, the PDP candidate, thereby creating legal logjam that lasted till three days to the election.

He said that the PDP went to the election with its hands tied to the back because of the uncharitable actions of INEC, which has no doubt become an arm of the APC.

He maintained that apart from the APC, political parties in Nigeria are now contesting elections against INEC.

Governor Fayose said that,  “to sustain the ‘see and buy’ strategy and legalise money politics, the APC-led federal government deliberately created poverty in the country so as to continue to enslave the minds of Nigerians with peanuts to get their votes on election day, saying; “Dibo ko sebe (vote and collect money to cook soup) was the slang used by the APC in the Ondo State election and that only worked because the APC federal government have put Nigerians in abject poverty.

“Even though INEC allowed what appeared like a free and fair atmosphere on the election day, the election had been won and lost before it was held.

“For instance, INEC that witnessed the PDP primary election that produced Mr Eyitayo Jegede succumbed to pressure from the APC cabal to replace him with Jimoh Ibrahim, who did not take part in any primary election known to the Electoral Act.

“What could anyone have done under 72 hours in an election that was heavily monetised by the APC?

Sanchez brace keeps Arsenal in EPL title hunt

Sanchez brace keeps Arsenal in EPL title hunt

November 27, 2016

Arsenal's Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez AFP

Arsenal closed the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea as Alexis Sanchez bragged a brace in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s side are within three points of top spot after Chile forward Sanchez struck in each half at the Emirates Stadium to take his goal tally for the season to 10.

Sanchez gave Arsenal an early lead before Callum Wilson equalised with a penalty before the interval.

Theo Walcott headed Arsenal back in front just 24 hours after the birth of his second child and Sanchez wrapped up the points.

After drawing three of their last four league games to fall six points behind Chelsea, this was a timely victory for fourth-placed Arsenal, who are now unbeaten in their last 19 matches in all competitions and firmly in the title race.

Even Wenger conceded Arsenal had lost their momentum of late and, in a bid to revitalise his team, the boss made seven changes from the midweek draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

France striker Olivier Giroud dropped to the bench and there was a recall for right-back Mathieu Debuchy, who last played for Arsenal in November 2015.

On-loan Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was ineligible to play for Bournemouth against his parent club, but his absence didn’t stop the visitors sticking to manager Eddie Howe’s philosophy of playing out from the back.

It proved a fatal indulgence in the 12th minute.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Adam Federici rolled the ball out to Steve Cook on the left and instead of knocking it long under pressure, the defender tried a back-pass that was intercepted by Sanchez, who gleefully slotted into the empty net.

Wilshere, watching from the stands, buried his head in his coat as injured Arsenal team-mate Danny Welbeck turned to indulge in some banter with his friend.

– Debatable –

Sanchez caused more chaos in the Bournemouth defence moments later with a surging run that ended with contact from Nathan Ake, but no foul was given by referee Mike Jones as Arsenal appealed for a penalty.

If that was frustrating for Arsenal, there was worse to come at the hands of Jones in the 23rd minute when he gave Bournemouth a debatable penalty for Nacho Monreal’s collision with Wilson, who picked himself up to slot home his club’s first ever goal against the Gunners.

Just before Bournemouth’s leveller, Debuchy’s return had come to a premature end when he limped off with the latest in a long line of injuries.

His departure seemed to destabilise Arsenal’s back four and Bournemouth should have taken advantage when Ake headed a free-kick towards the unmarked Adam Smith, who could only direct his header well over.

Arsenal are usually the ones bewitching their opponents with slick passing, but they were getting a taste of their own medicine from Bournemouth as another flowing move gave Brad Smith space for a shot that Petr Cech saved at his near post.

Sanchez tried to restore order just before half-time with a thunderous shot that cannoned back off the crossbar.

That warning shot foreshadowed a more dynamic period for Arsenal after half-time and they regained the lead in the 53rd minute.

Mesut Ozil’s cross was deflected on by Ake to Monreal, who scooped a cross back towards Walcott and the Arsenal winger nodded home from close-range before marking the birth of son Arlo with a ‘rock the baby’ celebration.

Having been embroiled in penalty controversy in the first half, Jones made another dubious call when he denied Bournemouth a spot-kick after Monreal blocked Simon Francis’s pass with his arm.

Bournemouth were finishing strongly and it took a fine save from Cech to deny Benik Afobe, but Sanchez eased Arsenal’s nerves in the 90th minute when he tapped in from Giroud’s cross.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WARNS AGENCIES AGAINST REJECTING CORPS MEMBERS

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WARNS AGENCIES AGAINST REJECTING CORPS MEMBERS

The Federal Government has directed all Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to accept Corps members posted to them by the National Youth Service Corps.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer Babachir David Lawal, conveyed the directive in a circular to the MDAs.

The circular, with reference number SGF.15/T/745, reads in part: “Government’s attention has been drawn to the growing incidence of rejection of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to government establishments.

“To put an end to this undesirable development, it has become necessary to reiterate that the directive that Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) should not reject Youth Corps members posted to them for their primary assignment is still in force.”

Engineer Lawal said the government’s directive was imperative in order to maintain the objective of the NYSC Scheme, which includes the involvement of Nigerian graduates of specific age category in national development and integration.

He says government establishments are also directed to ensure that the Corps members are actively engaged during their primary assignment just as the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports through the National Youth Service Corps is expected to monitor the level of compliance and give periodic reports to the government.

Egbegbe: Stealing of iPhones shameful – AGN

Egbegbe: Stealing of iPhones shameful – AGN

Seun Egbegbe

Mr Tope Babayemi, Interim Chairman of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos chapter on Friday described the alleged theft of nine iPhones by Oluwaseun Olasunkanmi as shameful.

Babayemi said that the law must take its course if he is tried and found guilty.

Olasunkanmi popularly known as “Seun Egbegbe’’ was alleged to have stolen nine iPhones at the Computer Village, in Ikeja.

“For me, it’s an example of bad practice and by extent it’s an example of the kind of thing we as a society are working hard to discourage.

“At the level of the guild and association, because we are not a hundred percent settled, there are court cases and issues at the national level that are affecting issues at the state chapters.

“My position as interim chairman is that no formal request has been made to us for assistance in anyway.

“As such what you do in that kind of situation is you allow the law to take its course, because law and order is paramount in building society.

“If he has been found to commit that offence, the law must take its course.’’

Babyemi advised upcoming artistes to desist from engaging in acts that could tarnash their image as well as that of the association.

Kanye West is Probably Suffering From the Kardashian Curse – Akon

Rap artiste Akon believes that Kanye West may be suffering from the “Kardashian curse”.The “Kardashian curse” is a misfortune experienced by men in relationships with the Kardashians. Kanye is married to the most popular Kardashian ‘Kim’.Speaking to TMZ about Kanye’s breakdown and the likelihood that the “Kardashian curse” was at work, Akon said, ”I actually thought about that, because at first it was a big joke to everybody. But in Africa there have always been sayings that sometimes you can’t deny what you see, but oftentimes the eye may deceive you too. But in this case it’s been not what you see, it’s experiences.”It’s hard to comment on something like that as much as the evidence may show you that that’s possible, you don’t wanna discredit it as it may just be bad luck. I just wanna investigate this further just for fun, it is something to think about though. I wouldn’t deny it but I wouldn’t promote it either. When you think about it, the evidence all points to it.”…. If something mental happens to Tyga, then we can say it’s safe to say. That’s three in a row,” he said

Why attacks on oil pipelines will continue – Experts

Why attacks on oil pipelines will continue – Experts

November 24, 2016

Just weeks ago, Nigeria’s junior oil minister said output was almost back to normal after a year of devastating attacks against the major African oil producer.

But now it seems Emmanuel Kachikwu spoke way too soon about the 2.1 million barrel per day figure.

Hours after President Muhammadu Buhari held talks with representatives from the oil-producing Niger delta in the capital Abuja on November 1, the attacks resumed in spectacular fashion.

A blast on the Trans-Forcado pipeline just 48 hours after it reopened was a brazen provocation, casting doubt on the Nigerian government’s ability to secure peace in the region.

Forcados produces 215,000 barrels per day.

Then on November 5, the major pipeline was hit again by the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, a group that has stepped up its attacks in recent months.

In the middle of the month, the Niger Delta Avengers, the main group in the restive region, claimed to have bombed three Nembe creek trunk lines.

The Avengers said the ongoing sabotage was in response to the Nigerian navy’s “Operation Sharkbite” in the region aimed at stopping attacks by militants and pirates.

“We are determined to continue this war by all means necessary,” the Avengers said.

– ‘Constant invasion’ –

The Nigerian army launched “Operation Crocodile Smile” in the oil hub of Warri earlier this year in an attempt to stop the pipeline sabotage hammering the economy.

But regional leaders say that the presence of the troops is stoking tension in a frustrated region, caught between violent militants and heavy-handed soldiers.

Shootouts here have led to high-profile casualties.

In October, a Nigeria Premier League defender Izu Joseph was accidentally shot dead when soldiers raided his hometown of Okaki in southern Bayelsa state.

Last week, Nigerian newspaper Premium Times said that soldiers had killed a kidnapped pastor in August mistaking him for a militant.

Fed up with the violence, women have started protesting.

“Only some days back, they (soldiers) invaded Oporoza community with two gunboats,” Godspower Gbenekama from Gbaramatu community, near Warri, told AFP.

“Angered by the constant invasion, women from the community mobilised in protest, met the soldiers and told them that they were tired of their frequent invasion of their community.”

– No trust –

There is a deep-rooted distrust of President Buhari, a northerner, in an impoverished region where people are cynical about politicians after years of broken promises.

Some feel they are being punished after not voting for Buhari’s ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party in 2015.

“There is no desire to achieve anything through the deceit called peace talks,” Niger delta activist Annkio Briggs told AFP.

“The Niger delta not voting for APC in 2015 was unforgivable and the people are being punished today.”

Others feel that Buhari’s pledge to create a $10 billion Niger delta infrastructure fund is nearly impossible to achieve given Nigeria’s economic crisis.

“I don’t think that they really feel a sense of trust in the government,” said Dolapo Oni, energy researcher at Ecobank.

“Unfortunately there’s not much that government can do, I think the disruptions will likely continue,” Oni said.

Charles Swabey, oil and gas analyst for BMI Research, echoed Oni, saying the attacks were pressure tactics that played havoc with production and showed the government the militants “have the capability to carry on.”

The wave of attacks began in early 2016, tipping the West African country into a recession in August.

Nigeria depends on oil for 70 percent of its government revenue and the bulk of its export earnings.

The militants want more energy wealth to go back to the communities it is taken from and are calling for more development and a clean-up of the polluted environment.

EFCC arraigns Dasuki’s aide, others for N36bn fraud

EFCC arraigns Dasuki’s aide, others for N36bn fraud

November 23, 2016

Immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday arraigned Col. Nicholas Ashinze, a former Special Assistant to the embattled ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, for money laundering.

Ashinze was docked along with an Austrian, Wolfgang Reinl, and two others, Edidiong Idiong and Sagir Mohammed, in a Federal High Court, Abuja.

A statement by EFCC’s spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said the accused were arraigned on a 13 counts of corruption and money laundering to the tune of N36.8 billion.

The defendants are standing trial alongside five companies accused of diverting huge sums from the office of the NSA under Dasuki.

“The companies are Geonel Integrated Services Limited, Unity Continental Nigeria Limited, Helpline Organization, Vibrant Resource Limited and Sologic Integrated Services Limited.

“In one of the charges, the EFCC alleges that Ashinze and Reinl, who is the Managing Director of Geonel Integrated Services Limited, transferred N550 million to Edidiong Idiong, a lawyer.

“The transfer was made on April 22, 2014 in violation of Section 15 (2) (b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them, the statement said.

Counsel to EFCC, I. O. Uket, expressed the commission’s readiness to immediately begin prosecution of the accused, saying that he had the witnesses present in court.

“If the court is ready, we are also ready to produce our first witness as we have our witnesses in court,’’ he reportedly told the court.

But Ashinze’s counsel, Ernest Nwoye, told the court that he had a pending application for the bail of his client.

He urged the court to grant the defendant bail on self recognition having earlier been admitted to bail by an FCT High Court.

Afam Osigwe, counsel representing the second and fifth defendants, also prayed the court to admit Reinl to bail.

La Liga: Bale to miss El Clasico due to ankle injury

La Liga: Bale to miss El Clasico due to ankle injury

November 23, 2016

Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale will miss his side’s blockbuster clash with Barcelona next weekend due to an ankle injury, Spanish media reported on Wednesday.

Bale was forced off just before the hour mark of Real’s 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday as the European champions secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League for a record 20th consecutive season.

“Gareth Bale…has been diagnosed with a traumatic dislocation of the peroneal tendons in his right ankle,” Madrid said in a statement on Wednesday without stating how long Bale will be sidelined.

However, Madrid sports dailies Marca and AS both reported Bale has been ruled out for the clash at Barcelona’s Camp Nou on December 3 with AS suggesting the Welshman will be ruled out for three to four weeks.

Bale will almost certainly also to miss Borussia Dortmund’s visit to the Santiago Bernabeu on December 7 to decide top spot in Champions League Group F and also faces a race against time to be fit for the Club World Cup in Japan a week later.

Biafra Isn’t Only About South East – IPOB Lists 6 States That Will Join ‘New Republic’ [LIST]

Biafra Isn’t Only About South East – IPOB Lists 6 States That Will Join ‘New Republic’ [LIST]

 BY IFYSANDY

The Movement for the Actialization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) yesterday faulted President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising only the South-East geo-political zone as states canvasing Biafra’s independence.

While the group said it was a good omen in the first instance for the President to acknowledge that Biafra had become a household name in the east, they disagreed that Delta, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa and Cross- River were missing out.The groups said the Federal Government goofed by forgetting that the five eastern states, namely, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi, were neatly knitted with their neighbouring South South zone in the old Eastern region. The newly appointed MASSOB leader in Delta state, Chinedu Amaifeobu supported by the Zonal Commander of Security, Ignatius Adili-Ajana, in Asaba yesterday said the South East and the South- South states were abinitio tied by the same umbilical cord.According to him, the two geo-political zones were bonded by the same cultural, spiritual, moral and religious heritage, hence, the government of Nigeria would not hound them out of Biafra. He said: “We urge our South-South brothers and sisters not to be deluded by the divide and rule antics of the Nigerian government but remember the sons and daughters of whom they are.”

Senate condemns jungle justice, urges the FG, states, police, to punish perpetrators

Senate condemns jungle justice, urges the FG, states, police, to punish perpetrators

NOVEMBER 23, 20165:13

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA—WORRIED over the rising cases of jungle justice in the country, the Senate yesterday condemned the act in totality, asking the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, state Attorney Generals and the Police to apprehend and prosecute those involved. The Senate also urged its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to urgently accelerate the passage of the Anti-Jungle Justice Bill before it and asked the Nigerian Police to immediately confirm or deny the occurrence of the recent purported mob action in Lagos and other states. The Upper Chambers, while calling on the Nigerian Police to immediately ensure that they fished out all perpetrators of this barbarism and bring them to book, also urged the Police and other security agencies to live up to their responsibilities to protect the younger ones. The resolutions were sequel to a motion by Senator Gbenga Ashafa, APC, Lagos East and co- sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume, APC, Borno South, titled, Condemning the rising cases of Jungle Justice in the country. Presenting the motion, Senator Ashafa said: “The Senate is distressed by the rising cases of jungle justice by mobs that have arrogated to themselves the power to condemn others to death and execute judgement without recourse to the law courts in different parts of Nigeria. “The Senate is worried about this trend, especially the case of a young man recently lynched in Orile area of Lagos State for stealing. “Horrified that these rising barbaric acts are in most cases, perpetrated with a crowd of people watching unperturbed is most disheartening as each act dehumanizes us as a race. “ Furious that this is happening and continues to become more alarming everyday in these considerable hard conditions our people are passing through. “Disgusted that this is not the first time in the country that mobs have engaged’ in jungle justice. Some of the instances of jungle justice are still fresh in our memories. We can never forget when four young boys, Ugonna Obuzor, Toku Lloyd, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, all students of the University of Port Harcourt were lynched in 2012 after they were falsely accused of being thieves at Aluu, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.’’ In his contribution to the motion, Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume, said:  “The case of a 7- year-old at Orile, Lagos, has gone viral and that is why myself and the mover of the motion said we should ask the police to confirm or deny because sometimes social media messages can be faulty. “We have had several times leaders being stripped naked in the public by mob. We really need to standup to this and condemn it and, in fact, move further to do something, otherwise we are going to have a society where everybody that is strong enough or have the number can take the law into their hands. ‘’This case is very serious and this Senate is not for standing up occasions like this and I urge my colleagues to support this very simple, straight forward motion. We must look at doing something about the disorderliness and the mob action that is so recurrent in our society these days.’’ Also contributing to the motion, Senator Shehu Sani, APC, Kaduna Central, who noted that mob action had become the order of the day in Nigeria because of lack trust among the people, government and the police, said:  “It is quite unfortunate that mob justice is becoming a way of life in our communities, towns and in villages and I can directly attribute it to the loss of confidence between the people, the government and the law enforcement agencies. It has become a recurrent decimal that each day you see people being killed.’’ In his contribution, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, PDP, Abia North, urged the Senate to call the government to order.

Inside story of the ASUU one-week ‘warning’ strike

CAT-AND-MOUSE GAME

— 22nd November 2016

■  Inside story of the ASUU one-week ‘warning’ strike

By Gabriel Dike

The nation’s public universities currently look like a ghost town following the one-week ‘warning’ strike declared, last week, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Many were caught unaware when  Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, its National President, addressed newsmen to announce its intention to commence the ‘warning’ strike, following a meeting held by its National Executive Council (NEC), in Abuja, on Monday, November 14. This is because before this time some of its officials had been singing discordant tunes with some denying  that the association was planning to embark on an industrial strike while others dropped the hint.
For instance, when, in October, the ASUU branch chairman of the University of Abuja, Mr. Ben Ugheoke, was quoted by a news agency to have said that university lecturers would commence strike in November, both the national body and the university branch of ASUU promptly denied the report.
Three months ago, the national leadership of the union including the zones addressed newsmen in Abuja, Lagos and other cities on government carefree attitude regarding the implementation of ASUU demands. The union said it was sensitising Nigerians on the plight of universities while lecturers used the occasion to appeal to concerned Nigerians to reach out to government to do the needful.
With the exception of some students and parents who begged President Muhammadu Buhari to accede to the demands of the union, neither the Federal Government nor the National Assembly did anything to engage the union in discussion throughout the three months of public sensitization.
But when it became clear that ASUU was determined to embark on what it called a warning strike, the government only reacted to the union threat less than 24 hours to the strike.
In the past six years, the association had consistently engaged, without success, various administrations to constitute government team that would help renegotiate the 2009 agreement. This resulted in two industrial actions in 2012 and 2013. Of recent, precisely on May 10, 2016, its leadership engaged the Buhari government through the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu. He promised to resolve the contentious issues within two weeks. So far, that has not happened.

ASUU SENSITIZATION
CAMPAIGN
The Coordinator of ASUU Lagos Zone, Prof Olusiji Sowande, told newsmen in September that the union made concerted efforts at getting government to address the issues but without success. “We consider it our patriotic duty to call the attention of government and Nigerians to these issues threatening the well-being and industrial peace in the nation’s public universities at this critical period,’’ he said. “We are perplexed and disappointed that the federal and state governments are not responding to our consistent appeals to bring about genuine transformation, driven by highly motivated human capital, in the education sector.”
Embarking on strike has never been a favoured choice, he insisted, given that “our members feel and suffer the most during and after every strike. It is unfortunate that the only language government appears to respect and listens to is, that of strike. Let it be known that our union has in the past made a lot of sacrifices. If it becomes inevitable it would once again sacrifice the comforts of its members to take up the patriotic duty of rescuing our education system.
“In order to forestall this avoidable crisis, we appeal to all genuinely progressive individuals and groups to prevail on the Nigerian government to arrest a brewing and potentially combustible situation in the Nigerian university system before it degenerates into a serious conflagration. This is an ill-wind that portends negative effects for all.’’
As it turned out, nobody seemed to have paid attention to Prof. Sowande’s cry.
Chairperson of ASUU UNILAG, Dr. Adelaja Odukoya disclosed that the federal government freely entered into the agreement with the union, which is binding on both parties, adding that in an effort to cause the government to fully implement the agreement, the union embarked on strike in 2012 and 2013, leading to the signing of the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding). As things stand, several aspects of the agreement are yet to be implemented, he said. They include implementation of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), release of Needs Assessment Intervention Fund, funding of state universities, earned academic allowance and renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

ISSUES IN CONTENTION
ASUU National President, Prof Abiodun Ogunyemi disclosed that Nigerian universities based on the 2009 agreement required N1.300 trillion and in the signed MOU, government agreed to release intervention funds in six instalments starting with N200 billion in 2013, N220 billion each in the remaining five years (2014-2018). As at now, the third quarter of 2016, he stated, the government is in arrears of N605 billion.
“The implication is that government is not committed to the full implementation of this component of our agreement,” he said. “The funding crisis is seriously impacting negatively on the state of infrastructure and research facilities in our universities. This lack of commitment to improving the education sector of the country is further expressed in the decline in the budgetary allocation to education from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016 as opposed to the 26 per cent UNESCO benchmark.’’
On state universities, Prof. Ogunyemi said the issue of irregular or non-payment of salaries and subvention in state universities is giving the union great concern adding that, “the practice of state governments withholding the salary of our members for a period ranging from three to eight months is condemnable.”
According to ASUU boss, the federal government has refused to release the outstanding balance of N128,250,692,596 billion meant for lecturers earned academic allowance, three years after the MOU was signed.
With regard to the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement which is the main contention, Prof Ogunyemi disclosed that the review of the document ought to have been done in 2012 and 2015 stressing that ASUU has shown understanding on the matter in the last four years. But now he warns: “Our members are frustrated and increasingly agitated by government’s apparent reluctance and foot-dragging on this matter. Government should act fast to forestall the impending consequences leading to industrial dispute.’’

THE ONE-WEEK
WARNING STRIKE
On Wednesday, last week, ASUU kept to its promise as its members nationwide began a warning strike which resulted in the disruption of academic, admission and research activities in state and federal universities. Some university managements were forced to postpone on-going examinations. Last minute efforts by the federal government and the National Assembly to get ASUU to shelve the strike hit the rock as lecturers in public universities heeded the directive of the National Executive Council (NEC) and went on with the strike.
Sources at the NEC meeting said there were four options presented by the branches: one week, two weeks, three weeks and dialogue but after deliberation, a compromise was reached for one week warning strike.
Following the strike, universities looked like ghost town as lecture halls were deserted. The few students who managed to come for lectures were disappointed as there were no lectures. In anger, they chided the government and ASUU for toying with their future and demanded for a quick resolution of the face-off.
Reports from various campuses indicate that lecturers heeded the directive of NEC as confirmed by their chairmen. The ASUU chairman, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun state, Dr. Bayo Akinsanya told The Sun Education that after the congress on Tuesday, a letter was sent to the Vice Chancellor about the warning strike, meaning that no academic/meetings and research would hold on the campus.
At University of Ibadan, the 2016/2017 second semester examination was postponed as members stayed away from the exam halls. This fact was confirmed by the university branch chairman of ASUU, Dr. Deji Omole. He informed that at the congress held on Tuesday which was attended by the Vice Chancellor, deans and heads of department, members agreed to observe the strike and hoped the federal government would address their demands.
At the Lagos State University (LASU), the branch chairman, Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi confirmed that academic activities on the campus were paralysed as members of the union complied with the directive.

STUDENTS REACT
A 400 level English Language student of UNILAG, Samson (surname withheld) taxed the Buhari administration to address the demands of the lecturers to avert the real strike. “We are at the receiving end now,” he said. “For sometime now, ASUU has been pleading with government on the issues. But our lecturers should also understand that the current economic situation is affecting the government. I want the issues resolved.’’
A female student of LASU, Stella Nwachukwu, of Department of Microbiology, said the warning strike was unfortunate, as it would surely affect their academic programme.  She urged the federal government to meet with ASUU leadership to discuss  and reach agreement on contentious issues.

FG APPEAL TO ASUU
Less than 24 hours to the warning strike, the federal government made a passionate appeal to ASUU to put the action on hold. It appreciated ASUU’s patience since 2009, a statement issued by Mr. Ben Bem Goong, the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations Department of the Federal Ministry of Education noted while urging its members to “embrace dialogue in resolving the contentious issues at stake in the interest of students and their parents.”
“Our position to the proposed warning strike is not new,” he said. “We have been in a marathon meeting led by the Permanent Secretary on the issue. Government is working towards resolving the issues. We appreciate and understand ASUU’s patience but in the interest of the student, we beg that the strike be put on hold.’’

Congrats!!! Chelsea top of table

Chelsea top of table

November 20, 2016

File: Chelsea's Brazilian-born Spanish striker Diego Costa

Diego Costa scored his 10th goal of the season as Chelsea won 1-0 at Middlesbrough to record a sixth consecutive victory and take over at the Premier League summit.

Costa struck for the third straight game with half-time approaching in Sunday’s game as Antonio Conte’s side underlined their title credentials by posting a sixth clean sheet in a row.

It took them a point clear of Liverpool and Manchester City, and three ahead of fourth-place Arsenal.

“It was a good performance against a very strong team,” Chelsea manager Conte told Sky Sports.

“Don’t forget Middlesbrough drew with Arsenal and Man City away. For this reason I’m pleased for the performance and attitude of my players.

“If you have the possibility to kill the game, it’s important to kill the game. But I’m pleased because Middlesbrough showed themselves to be a good team.”

Only the woodwork prevented Chelsea from winning by a more handsome margin as Pedro Rodriguez hit the bar midway through the second half, during which Middlesbrough were forced to hang on for long spells.

Aitor Karanka’s side retained hope while the deficit remained at a single goal, but the gulf in class between the sides was clear.

It leaves Boro one point above the relegation zone in their first season back in the Premier League following promotion.

“I am really pleased with the attitude of my players,” said Karanka.

“I am not worried about the look of the league table at the moment because all I am concerned about is the performances.

“If the performances were bad I would worry, but if the performances are good then we will start to win games.”

Costa rewarded Chelsea’s dominance as the Spain striker put the visitors — unchanged for the fifth consecutive league game — ahead four minutes before the end of the first half.

It stemmed from a disputed corner, Middlesbrough claiming debutant full-back Fabio da Silva had not touched the ball as it ran out of play.

– Fingertip save –

Eden Hazard’s in-swinging set-piece looped into the air as Calum Chambers and Gaston Ramirez challenged Marcos Alonso at the near post.

Despite the hosts having numbers back to defend, Costa reacted first to volley the loose ball home from inside the six-yard box, taking him to double figures for the campaign.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Victor Valdes was partially at fault for failing to come off his line.

His indecision was in stark contrast to earlier in the half when the former Barcelona man produced a stunning fingertip save to deflect a first-time Pedro shot over the bar.

It was one of few clear-cut chances before the interval as Boro were largely successful in their attempts to negate the threat of Conte’s side by packing midfield and looking to counter-attack.

The out-of-touch Alvaro Negredo wasted their two main openings, first firing across the face of goal and then heading wide from Antonio Barragan’s deep cross.

Ramirez shot over early in the second half after Negredo’s dummy created space on the edge of the box for the Uruguay international, but it was a rare threat from the hosts.

Boro have forced draws against Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s City this season, but after falling behind they rarely looked like troubling Chelsea’s three-man back line.

Having not conceded a league goal since September 24 — almost 10 hours of football — Chelsea are on their best defensive run for six years.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois preserved their latest shut-out late on when he parried a powerful Negredo volley as the hosts belatedly pushed bodies forward.

The majority of chances arrived at the other end.

Alonso almost doubled the visitors’ advantage within seconds of kick-off in the second half, the Spaniard forcing a fine low save from Valdes after Hazard helped on Victor Moses’s cross.

The second goal failed to materialise, but Chelsea closed out their latest victory with relative ease to secure another valuable three points towards their growing title challenge.
