Mourinho dares Wenger in another rivalry clash

After the thrills and frills of 2018 Russia World Cup qualifiers all over the continents, action resumes this weekend in all the world leagues including the La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, English Premier League (EPL), and a host of others.

The English Premier League (EPL) enters its match day 12 with the big four, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal aiming to amass the three maximum points at stake to improve on their title chase.

League leaders, Liverpool will be away to Southampton on Sunday, while Middlesbrough hosts second placed Chelsea also on Sunday.

Manchester City will play Crystal Palace and Tottenham who are fifth on the log faces West Ham.

In all of these, the match between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford today has been generating a lot of interest among fans of the two rival teams.

No doubt, a game involving Manchester United and Arsenal is a big match any day, especially with the kind of tension this one is generating.

Former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, who is now in charge at Man United had called Arsene Wenger a specialist in failure, after Chelsea defeated Arsenal, a name Wenger detested, and has refused to shake Mourinho anywhere they meet on and off the pitch.

In today’s encounter, however, Wenger would definitely want to take his own pound of flesh by beating Mourinho – coached Man United.

No doubt, Wenger is going to cash in on injury-hit Man United to wreck havoc on his perceived enemy.

In this encounter,  Mourinho could be without seven senior players including his entire first choice defence, as he faces a worsening injury crisis.

Centre-halves Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling will miss the game as well as suspended striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic while there is serious doubts over the fitness of captain Wayne Rooney, midfielder Marouane Fellaini and full backs Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw.

However, the absence of Wayne Rooney  and Zlatan Ibrahimovic  could give Marcus Rashford the chance to start up front.

The England striker has spent most of the season marooned out wide under Mourinho and his form has dipped as a consequence and United’s injury woes could see Wenger taking his pound of flesh from ‘The Special One.”

Nigerian footballer executed in Singapore for drug trafficking

The Presidency yesterday lamented the execution of a Nigerian footballer, Chijoke Obioha, in Singapore for drug trafficking.

The 35-year-old footballer was said to have gone to the Asian country for trials when he was caught trafficking in hard drugs on April 9, 2007.

Consequently, he was sentenced to death about four years ago and remained on the death row until he was executed yesterday.

Reacting to Obioha’s execution in a statement yesterday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described it as heartbreaking, given repeated calls for Nigerians to desist from criminal activities like drug peddling.

The statement signed by Dabiri-Erewa’s Special Assistant on Media, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, in Abuja said since Singapore is determined to enforce its laws as a deterrent to drug trafficking, which has reduced as a result of its stringent capital punishment, there was not much that could be done except to continue to appeal.

“While we regret the death sentence passed on the Nigerian, we once again appeal to Nigerians to avoid crimes like drug trafficking with most countries, especially in Asia, declaring zero tolerance for drug trafficking,”, Dabiri-Erewa stated.

She reiterated her appeal to Nigerians to avoid drug peddling in their host countries as laws of countries, whether acceptable or not, are difficult to influence.

The late Obioha was said to have been arrested with more than 2.6 kilogrammes of cannabis, surpassing the statutory amount of 500 grammes presumed as drug trafficking in Singapore.

 The Amnesty International had called on Singapore to immediately halt yesterday’s planned execution of Obioha, but Obioha’s family was informed that his appeal for clemency had been rejected.

Rafendi Djamin, Amnesty International’s Director for South-East Asia and the Pacific, said: “The Singapore government still has time to halt the execution of Chijoke Stephen Obioha.

“We are dismayed that clemency has not been granted in his case, but remain hopeful that they won’t carry out this cruel and irreversible punishment against a person sentenced to the mandatory death penalty for a crime that should not even be punished by death.

 “Death penalty is never the solution. It will not rid Singapore of drugs.

“By executing people for drug-related offences, which do not meet the threshold of most serious crimes, Singapore is violating international law.

“Under Singaporean law, when there is a presumption of drug possession and trafficking, the burden of proof shifts from the prosecutor to the defendant.

“This violates the right to fair trial by turning the presumption of innocence on its head.

“Drug-related offences do not meet the threshold of the “most serious crimes” to which the use of the death penalty must be restricted under international law.

“International law also prohibits the imposition of the death penalty as a mandatory punishment and Amnesty International opposes the use of the death penalty outright, regardless of the crime.”

Atiku appeals to ASUU to shelve strike

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to suspend its strike action and embrace negotiation with the government.
The university lecturers had on Wednesday commenced a one-week strike over failure by the Federal Government to implement the 2009 Agreement and 2013 Memorandum of Understanding.
Speaking during his 70th birthday celebration in Yola on Thursday, Atiku said his concern was about the children who would be out of school, while calling on the union to shelve the strike action.
He said, “My call to ASUU is for the sake of the education of our children, I call on them to suspend their strike action and continue negotiations because I believe at the end of the day an amicable resolution of the issues in contention would be reached. The most important thing is to think of the children not going to school.”
The former Vice President also reiterated his position that if he had been the President of Nigeria, the Boko Haram insurgency, which had plagued the North Eastern part of the country, would not have existed, saying the absence of strong political will and courage in dealing with the uprising was to blame for the lingering situation.

With the Federal Government’s announcement of imminent famine next year coupled with Nigeria’s craze for imported goods, experts have raised the alarm of possible flooding of the Nigerian market with harmful ‘plastic rice.”

Since 2011, the world was alerted to the industrial manufacture of rice by Chinese firms.

In a report by the Korean Times on the growing menace, the newspaper said; “China famous for having all, making all, has now been reported to have made rice out of plastic and has distributed it.

“The Korean-language Weekly Hong Kong in Hong Kong quoted Singapore media that “Fake rice made out of plastic is massively sold on the Chinese market.”

“According to the report, some distributors are selling fake rice in Taiyuan, Shaanxi Province, and this rice is a mixture of potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic.

“This ‘plastic rice’ is made by forming potatoes and sweet potatoes into rice-like shape, then adding industrial synthetic resins,” said a food expert. “Since the rice is different from normal rice, it is hard like stone even when cooked.

Moreover, the synthetic resin in it is very harmful to the human body.”

One Chinese restaurant association official warns that eating three bowls of ‘plastic rice’ is the same as eating one vinyl bag. He added that since the rice is very dangerous there would be strict investigation on the rice factory.

But Nigerians can determine if the rice they have is genuine or not by following any of the simple tests:

The water test
Pour a tablespoon of raw rice into a glass filled with cold water and mix vigorously. If the rice falls to the bottom of the glass, everything is fine, if on the contrary it floats on the surface, be vigilant, because it surely contains plastic!

The fire test
Using a lighter and a match, burn a handful of rice. If it catches fire and smells of burnt plastic, you know what to do! Do not eat it!

The mortar and pestle test
When molding a few grains of rice with a mortar and pestle, the powder should be quite white. For artificial rice, you will notice a yellow discoloration instead.

The mold test
If you want to be sure that you do not risk anything with your cooked rice, put a small amount into a tupperware and leave it in a warm place. In a few days, mold will have to appear, otherwise it is that your rice is artificial.
