BIAFRA: IPOB takes Nnamdi Kanu’s case to ECOWAS court

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday said it is taking the continued detention without trial of its leader and Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, court to seek justice, since the Nigeria judiciary cannot deliver good judgment in the matter concerning his illegal detention. It also said that “the trial Judge, Mr John Tsoho did a tactical withdrawal from the case because he knew that the Federal Government of Nigeria has a bad case, and urged the Nigerian government to read the handwriting on the wall and do the honourable thing by releasing Mr Kanu and withdrawing the charges against him.” IPOB in a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful alleged that “the withdrawal of the trial Judge, Justice John Tsoho is also another application of delay tactics to pave way for the continued detention of Mr. Kanu and not only because he wanted to save his face from shame”, adding that “the judge is still working with the Federal Government to convict Mr. Kanu by all means”.

IPOB’s statement read: “We IPOB and Directorate of State, DOS, IPOB, have concluded plans to take the continued illegal detention of our leader and Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, court to seek justice for him since the courts in Nigeria have decided not to give him justice, in order to please their masters who have written the scripts the courts are playing. “We want to tell the world that the withdrawal of the trial Judge, Mr. John Tsoho from the case is another way of continuing his detention and not only to save his name from the embarrassment he has caused himself with his role in the case. We know that he is still working with the Federal Government and Department of State Services, DSS, to convict Mr. Kanu either by hook or by crook.”

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC)‎ and Political Adviser to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Charles Idahosa, alleged at the weekend that there was “internal sabotage” during the Edo State September 28 governorship election.
Idahosa has also called for the restructuring of the party in Edo State.
Appraising the just concluded election, Idahosa insisted there was internal sabotage against the party by some members who allegedly worked for opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He alleged that some party members betrayed the APC at the polls.
“We are going to restructure the APC because there was a lot of internal sabotage during the governorship election,” he said. Speaking specifically on what transpired on election day in Uhunmwode local government area, Idahosa, who is the party leader in area said some party members pretended to workg for the APC yet workedagainst the party’s victory.
“I was very, very sceptical and that was what saved the day. We are going to really look at the party because we suffered a lot of sabotage in this election, but, thank God we won.”
Reacting to PDP’s rejection of the results of the election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Idahosa expressed disappointment and observed that the party’s rejection of the results was made when INEC was yet to conclude announcement of the election results.
“I was disappointed at PDP’s reaction to the election. When you beat a child, you can’t stop him from crying. Let them shed the tears.”
He said contrary to the party’s pre-election rating that it will win, the PDP made noise through propaganda and spreading falsehood about the APC.
He predicted that in 2020, “Obaseki will win in all the 18 local government areas of the state because he is going to work hard like Oshiomhole to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.”
But, another APC‎ chieftain, Senator Domingo Obende faulted Idahosa’s call for restructuring of APC in Edo.
“What is important is that the party got victory at the last election. Whether there was internal sabotage, I don’t think that calls for the restructuring of a party”, he said.

The Federal Government has restated its willingness to negotiate with the Boko Haram to free the over 200 girls kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Borno State, in 2014.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, yesterday, reiterated government’s commitment to rescue the school girls abducted by terrorists on April 14, 2014.
Mohammed’s statements came a week after the Boko Haram released a video, where its leader, Abubakar Shekau threatened to attack more cities and vowed not to release the Chibok girls until his group’s members in detention are released.
Mohammed spoke yesterday on a live programme on Channels Television on Independence titled “Nigeria at 56: Recursive, Resilient, Rising.”
He said no group, local or international, could claim to have more stake or to be more committed to the rescue of the girls than the federal government.
He added that the issue of the rescue of the girls was a humanitarian one that everyone or group should be “passionate, but rational about”.
The minister said contrary to the position of some critics, government had robust counter-terrorism policy and had recorded significance success in fighting Boko Haram in the North-East.
He noted that the fact that the Chibok girls were yet to be rescued should not be a yardstick to write off the achievements of government in decimating the Boko Haram.
Mohammed recalled that upon assumption of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, many parts of the North-East were under the control of the Boko Haram and were not safe and accessible.
He said the situation “is not the same today as no part of the North-East region is under the control of the group.”
“The North-East is free now, students are returning to schools, all the towns and communities, hitherto, under the control of the terrorists have been liberated and those who fled their homes are gradually returning,” he said.
The minister also recalled that when the Buhari administration assumed power, it was 410 days after the Chibok girls were abducted without any effort to rescue them by the previous government.
He noted that in all cases of abduction, especially by terrorists, 24 hours was critical to ensuring prompt rescue. He added that the government in power then did not utilise the intelligence.
The minister said the present administration had thrice established links with the Boko Haram for the exchange of the abducted girls with the arrested members of the terrorist group.
He explained that on each occasion, the efforts were thwarted by either the link with the terrorist, fresh demands by Boko Haram or division in the camp of the terrorist group.
Mohammed said government had not foreclosed negotiation with the group on the release of the girls, but, it wanted to ensure that the link were genuine and credible.
He said government appreciated the efforts of the “Bring Back Our Girls” (BBOG) group, but noted “the administration is as concerned as they are and ready to work with them in ensuring the release of the girls.”
Oby Ezekwesili, one of the leaders of the BBOG, reiterated the position of the minister that 24 hours was critical in ensuring success or failure in cases of abduction by terrorists and added that the past administration failed in that regard.
Ezekwesili, however, said the BBOG group was disappointed that more than 900 days after the girls’ abduction, there was no tangible evidence or convincing plans by government on their release.
She said the group resumed its agitation with vigour to canvass citizens engagement in the release of the girls and ensure that government did not stay away from the parents of the girls.
She underscored the need for government to carry along the group in its rescue efforts and be consistent in its messages and briefings. The former minister pledged the support of the group to the government in ensuring a safe rescue of the abducted girls.
