FG spends N3.6trn out of N6trn budget

FG spends N3.6trn out of N6trn budget 29th October 2016.

*Settles N1,137.7trn debts

Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor

THE Federal government has so far spent N3.577 trillion out of the full year budget of N6.060 trillion for the 2016 fiscal year. This translates to a 79% performance of the pro-rated budget for the three quarters up to September 30, 2016.

In addition to the total of N2,439.9 trillion so far released for Capital, non-debt Recurrent and Service-wide Vote expenditures, a total of N1,137.7 trillion has also been paid out in domestic and foreign debt service expenditures. This includes N44bn transferred to the Sinking Fund to retire maturing obligations on bonds issued to contractors. This is contained in a statement released by the Budget and National Planning Ministry signed by the Media Adviser to the Minister, Mr. Akpandem James.

“To date, budgeted personnel cost and debt service obligations have been fully met on schedule. Additionally, government has done reasonably well in the challenging circumstances with respect to capital expenditures.

“It is noteworthy that the total amount of N753.6bn already released for capital expenditure in 2016 is the highest in the nation’s recent history, even in the era of high oil prices. Indeed, the capital releases to date exceed the aggregate capital expenditure budget for 2015 of N700bn, inclusive of capital expenditure in statutory transfers,” the statement said.

It will be recalled that at an interactive session with members of the Senate Committee on Appropriation in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister for Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, had said that in spite of the shortfall in revenue expectations, the government was committed to its debt obligations in addition to funding the critical sectors to enable government function smoothly, while seeking lasting solutions to revenue shortfalls.

Udoma had explained that although the 2016 Budget was well conceived, with reasonably conservative benchmarks, it recorded unanticipated revenue shortfalls along the line due to militants’ activities in the oil-producing Niger Delta region, a development which seriously affected the budgeted production levels for the fiscal year.

The minister said that the government adopted a targeted approach with respect to capital expenditure to ensure that releases are consistently made to those sectors whose activities have the capacity of driving economic growth and fostering job creation. Particular attention was focused on infrastructure, agriculture and other areas with high job creation potentials. The Minister pointed out that all the releases have been cash-backed.

DIVORCED CHIKA IKE: I’VE FOUND LOVE AGAIN

Divorced Chika Ike: I’ve found love again

— 29th October 2016

Three years after divorcing her ex-husband, Tony Ebireri, screen diva, Chika Ike seems to have found love again.

The actress’ marriage to Ebireri had come under heavy storm of accusations and counter accusations of infidelity, insubordination and domestic violence before it finally collapsed in 2013. Now, the Anambra State-born movie star is all set to give marriage a second chance.

In an exclusive chat with Inside Nollywood, Ike talks glowingly about the special man in her life and plans for remarriage. “Marriage is a beautiful institution. I will never talk down on marriage because it’s something I still look forward to. It’s what every woman hopes for. Though, I’m focused on my career right now, I do have a very special person in my life,” she enthuses.

When pressed further to reveal the identity of the man that tickles her heart, Ike whose latest movie, Miss Teacher is making waves in the cinemas, refused further talk about him.

“Well, that’s all I can say about my relationship; I have a special someone. His profile doesn’t matter to you right now,” she quips.

But is Chika Ike a fulfilled woman despite her fame and fortune? Hear her: “Honestly, I am not fulfilled yet. There are certain things I haven’t achieved. Every day I wake up, I want to get to the zenith of my career, but it takes one step at a time. I am still hoping to achieve more which would eventually make me a fulfilled woman.”

MMM Nigeria: Ponzi Scheme, robbing Peter to pay Paul?

MMM Nigeria: Ponzi Scheme, robbing Peter to pay Paul?

By Adelowo Adebumiti

Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi

With the current high rate of unemployment, job losses and pressing financial needs in the country, it is not surprising that the youth are embracing questionable get rich quick schemes and opportunities.

For instance, the number of Nigerians that now patronise the popular lottery games is on the increase. Some youths are also deeply involved in sport betting through such platforms as Nairabet, Merrybet and Bet9ja, among others.

It is against this backdrop that the MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria made a grand entrance into the Nigerian investment market in 2016. MMM stands for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox and takes its name from its founders, Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi, Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova.

The outfit was established in 1989 by these three Russian nationals, and promises its clients 30 per cent return on investment (ROI) for money put into the system for 30 days. The scheme prides itself as a mutual aid fund through which recruited members contribute money to assist others. The founders claimed they are not into banking, online business, investment company or a multi level marketing (MLM) programme. The scheme structure, however, indicates otherwise.

For instance, members can have multi-level structures under them and receive bonus from each donation of every participant in their structures.

The company has been able to persuade many Nigerians to buy into its idea. Many Nigerian big online Business coaches and entrepreneurs with vast subscriber base are encouraging their followers to key in to the MMM opportunity. Thus, some Nigerians have invested millions of Naira into this scheme and are enjoying their newfound wealth.

This reporter has seen screenshots of money many claimed to have earned from the scheme. According to one such subscriber, Babajide Abayomi, MMM ensures a level playing ground for all. And with it, people don’t have to be under the yoke of the banking system, which demands that huge interest be paid on loans. He said MMM is real and safe.

However, the question some have asked is: How long would it take to sustain the profits? Many still remember vividly the mad days of the Wonder banks in the early 2000s. Then, many lost their hard-earned money to the likes of Pennywise and such other scammers.

To really grasp the risk involved in investing in this type of scheme, a study of the founders’ backgrounds provides good insights into the viability of their outfit.

According to Wikileak, the online information library, МММ was a Russian company that perpetrated one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes in the 1990s. By different estimates, between five and 40 million people lost up to $10b. The website said the exact figures of money lost are not known, even to the founders. The site described Sergie Mavrodi as a Russian criminal and a former deputy of the State Duma in Russia. According to it, he is the founder of the МММ series of pyramid schemes. Wikileak reported that in 2007, Mavrodi was found guilty in a Russian court of defrauding 10,000 investors out of 110m rubles ($4.3m).

Wikileak reported: “In January 2011, Mavrodi launched another pyramid scheme called MMM-2011, asking investors to buy so-called Mavro currency units. He frankly described it as a pyramid, adding, “It is a naked scheme, nothing more … People interact with each other and give each other money. For no reason!” Mavrodi said his goal for launching MMM-2011 is to destroy the current financial system, which he considers unfair, and form something new to take its place.

“In 2011 he launched a similar scheme in India, called MMM India, again stating clearly that the vehicle is a pyramid. He has also launched MMM in China. He was reported to be trying to expand his operations into Western Europe, Canada, and Latin America.

“In 2015, MMM began operating in South Africa with the same business model as MMM-2011, claiming a “30 percent per month” returns through a “social financial network.”

“The group was identified as a possible pyramid scheme by the National Consumer Commission and accounts of clients were later frozen by Capitec Bank.”

In January 2016, the Chinese government banned MMM on the ground that it is a pyramid scheme, (Ponzi scheme), and not registered in the country. Earlier this year, the scheme crashed in South Africa. MMM Global only gave South Africans the bad news with a post on its website saying: “We regret to inform you that we have to close down the Republic of Bitcoin. It was an experiment, and, unfortunately, it failed. We turned out not to be able to pay 100 percent per month.” Also recently, the scheme collapsed in Zimbabwe.

One of the victims, Mrs. Rosemary Mawonde was quoted by Breaking Times, saying: “We never thought the scheme would end this way, as we believed that by using EcoCash to do the transactions, things were in order. I am surprised that EcoCash is also distancing itself from the scheme and it is clear that I will never recover the $300 that I invested.”

What then is a Ponzi scheme? The scheme (also a Ponzi game or a Ponzi) is an investment operation, where the operator, an individual or organisation pays returns to its investors from new capital paid to the operators by new investors, rather than from profit earned through legitimate investments. Operators of Ponzi schemes usually entice new investors by offering higher returns than other investments, in the form of short-term returns that are either abnormally high or unusually consistent.

Initially, the promoter would pay out high returns to attract more investors, and to lure current investors into putting in additional money. Other investors would begin to participate, leading to a cascade effect. The “return” to the initial investors is paid out of the investments of new entrants, and not out of profits.

Often, the high returns encourage investors to leave their money in the scheme, with the result that the promoter does not have to pay out very much to investors; he simply has to send them statements showing how much they have earned. This maintains a semblance that the scheme is an investment with high returns.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has warned the public about the activities of the scheme on August 30 of this year. According to its website, SEC said: “The attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria (SEC) has been drawn to the activities of an online investment scheme, tagged ‘MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (nigeria.mmm.net). The platform has embarked on an aggressive online media campaign to lure the investing public to participate in what it called “mutual aid financial network” with a monthly investment return of 30 percent.

“The Commission hereby notifies the investing public that the operation of this investment scheme has no tangible business model, hence it’s a Ponzi Scheme, where returns are paid from other people’s invested sum. Also, the Commission does not register its operation.

“The general public is hereby advised to distance itself from this online scheme. Please note that anyone that subscribe to this illegal activity does so at his/her own risk.”

Managing Partner, Two-Edge Partners Global Limited, Olajide Alex-Oni said such scheme is usually targeted at the extremely poor, greedy and desperate people of the society.

He said: “The get rich quick scheme usually comes out looking so attractive to the populace, but like what is, it is robbing Peter to pay Paul!

“When a company encourages existing investors to invite other potential investors by rewarding them with money from these new comers, then what do you call that? Such a model is not sustainable and is a highly risky investment, because once the flow of investors and their funds stop flowing into the scheme, the investors will most definitely suffer unimaginable losses.”

Speaking on MMM operations, he said a number of countries around the world have banned this scheme and Nigeria should equally do the same. He said since SEC has warned Nigerians on the activity of this group, it is, therefore, illegal to invest in them, because their model is a typical pyramid scheme. He explained that the scheme was not licensed to operate in Nigeria, noting that its operations are online based, which can crash or get closed down unannounced. He said it’s designed to attract huge traffic and promises unconventional high returns on investment.

Speaking further, Alex-Oni warned: “People have to be careful of such schemes, because they claim to be foreign investor driven with amazing success stories, thus the attraction for the ignorant. The ignorant in this case are usually aware of the risk involved, but the greed in them let them take such risk with the hope to exit before the scheme crashes.

“It is also quite sad that in some extreme cases, some investors actually commit their entire life savings into these kinds of ponzi schemes. People should learn to get creative and innovative through hard work and smart thinking and start creating values and ideas that money will chase. That way, you may start small, but you will think big to grow big the proper way. A warning is enough for the wise.”

LAGOS—A teacher, Enilolobo Olamilekan, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his students at Abogunloko area in Ikotun, Lagos. Olamilekan, who hails from Lagos State, admitted to have lured the girl to his parent’s apartment at 17 Ayodele Shitta Street, where he took advantage of the 12-year-old Junior Secondary School 2 student. Enilolobo Olamilekan Parading the suspect before journalists at her Oduduwa office, Ikeja yesterday, Lagos State Police image maker, Dolapo Badmus, explained that the suspect was apprehended by the school’s management after her mother lodged a complaint. However, Olamilekan explained that he did not have carnal knowledge of the girl. Rather, he said he only put his manhood into her mouth. According to him, “I teach them Business Studies, while I take some of the students on extra lesson after school hours. Her mother requested for a private lesson for her daughter and I told the mother to get her writing materials last Tuesday. “But on Wednesday, she did not do her home work and when I asked why, she said that her mother had not bought her the books. She also said that she was hungry. “After giving them the assignment for the day, I went to a shop to buy some things and she followed me. I bought her some books, biscuits and also gave her N50. But the owner of the shop said I should return the empty bottles of soft drinks I earlier bought. She told the girl to follow me to collect them. But when she got home, I brought out my manhood and put it inside her mouth. “But when I saw my younger brother, through the window, returning from school, I removed it.” The bubble burst after the girl’s curious mother got wind of what happened and subsequently reported the case at the Ikotun Police Division. The suspect, according to Badmus, will be charged for indecent assault, admonishing parents to be wary of those they leave their children with, particularly the girls.

FG, World Bank to develop master plan for coastal communities’ devt

FG, World Bank to develop master plan for coastal communities’ devt

ON OCTOBER 26, 2016.

By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA—The Federal Government and World Bank have entered a partnership arrangement aimed at developing a master plan for the development and protection of the coastal communities of the Niger Delta region. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Uguru Usani,  at a meeting with a delegation of the World Bank Group, led by Dahlia Lotayef, in Abuja, said the collaboration was expected to alleviate the sufferings of the people living in the coastal communities Pastor Usani said: “This visit is a fall out of the meeting on West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme held in Lome, Togo, recently.” He reiterated that the ministry would look into deliberations at the summit with a view to finding ways of utilizing them to develop and enhance economic and social activities in the coastal areas of the Niger Delta region. He stressed that the livelihood of the people in the coastal areas of the region depended largely on maritime activities, hence the need for the World Bank to align the promotion and protection of agricultural activities with its programmes in the region. According to him, “The Niger Delta region does not cover the entire coastal areas of Nigeria, so it is imperative that the West Africa Coastal Areas Development  Programme, WACA, considers improving the economic activities in the various sectors of all the coastal communities in Nigeria.” In her remarks, the leader of the delegation, Dahlia Lotayef, said WACA was established by the World Bank in 2015 in response to demands from the countries in the region to manage their growing coastal erosion and flooding problems. According to her, “WACA is designed to improve the livelihoods of the coastal communities in West Africa by reducing the vulnerability of its coastal areas and promoting climate-resilient integrated coastal management. The programme’s mix of technical assistance and investments will seek to preserve and rehabilitate the natural coastal resources essential for livelihoods, spur economic development, increase social welfare and support the sustainable development of key growth sectors, such as agro-industry, fisheries, offshore petroleum exploration/production   and tourism.”

NO PROVISION FOR FUEL SUBSIDY IN 2016 BUDGET –NNPC

No provision for fuel subsidy in 2016 budget –NNPC

— 26th October 2016

…Denies plan to increase petrol price

By Adewale Sanyaolu

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has said it has no plans to increase the pump price of petrol from N145 per litre, neither was it contemplating a return to subsidising fuel.
The rebuttal is coming on the heels of a statement credited to the Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division, NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari, that the sale of petrol at N145 was no longer feasible at the current exchange rate.
In a swift reaction yesterday, the NNPC, through its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Garba-Deen Muhammed, said reference of unsustainability of N145 per litre of petrol only relates to possible spike in international market price of petroleum products.
“This has been mitigated by NNPC’s long-term procurement contract plan that guarantees stable pricing.”
Muhammed further stated that it had a robust supply arrangement that can guarantee sustainable supply over a long period of time.
Kyari, on Monday reportedly said that the sale of petrol at N145 per litre was no longer sustainable with the current foreign exchange.
“We have a very difficult business environment. It is impossible today to import products at the current market price, current fixed foreign exchange,” Kyari reportedly said in Lagos.
The corporation, however, promised to sustain the tempo of petroleum products supply throughout the ember months and beyond across the country at the current rate of N145 per litre.
The state oil firm assured that it had resolved all issues that had to do with foreign exchange stability in order to ensure fuel price stability and distribution.
“Nigerians should not engage in panic buying, as there is no cause for alarm with respect to pump price increase or shortage of products,” it said.
Muhammed explained further that if there was going to be any increase in PMS price, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) would definitely sensitise Nigerians on it and give reasons for it.
“The statement people are referring to was made within the context of technical explanation, not within the context of downstream operations. A new window to make forex available for marketers for their import needs have been opened and they are satisfied with it,” he said.
Muhammad disclosed that there was already PMS glut in the market, as a lot of products were on ground waiting for off-takers, stressing that there was no payment of petrol subsidy by the government on petrol.

Vatican: Catholics may be cremated but the ashes may not be scattered

Vatican: Catholics may be cremated but the ashes may not be scattered

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith released an instruction Tuesday regarding burial and cremation, reiterating the Church's teaching that cremation, while strongly discouraged, can be permissible under certain restrictions but that scattering the ashes is forbidden.
“To rise with Christ”, published Oct. 25, states that while cremation “is not prohibited” the Church “continues to prefer the practice of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased.”

The document explains that after “legitimate motives” for cremation have been ascertained, the

“ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place,” such as in a cemetery or church. It goes on to state that is not permitted to keep the ashes in a home or to scatter them “in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects.”

“The burial, the last liturgy for us, is an expression of our hope for the resurrection,”Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the congregation wrote, “and therefore the Church continues to teach that the normal burial of the body is the normal form.”

The document further explains:

“by burying the bodies of the faithful, the Church confirms her faith in the resurrection of the body, and intends to show the great dignity of the human body as an integral part of the human person whose body forms part of their identity.”

“She cannot, therefore, condone attitudes or permit rites that involve erroneous ideas about death, such as considering death as the definitive annihilation of the person, or the moment of fusion with Mother Nature or the universe.”

Rather, burial in a cemetery or another sacred place:

“adequately corresponds to the piety and respect owed to the bodies of the faithful departed who through Baptism have become temples of the Holy Spirit and in which ‘as instruments and vessels the Spirit has carried out so many good works.’”

The Vatican originally answered the question of whether or not cremation was allowed in 1963, but with the increase in both its popularity and in practices such as scattering the ashes or keeping them in the home, it found it necessary to provide a new set of norms as guidance for bishops.

The instruction emphasized that “following the most ancient Christian tradition, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried.”
A proper respect for the dignity of the body, according to Fr. Thomas Bonino, an official at the CDF,  promotes the hylomorphic understanding of the human person as being composed of both body and soul.

“One must perhaps start from the idea of ecology,” Fr. Bonino told CNA, “meaning respect for nature. But the body is part of our nature, so a true ecology is also an ecology which takes into account the corporality of man.”

Fr. Bonino explained that:

"because the body forms part of our identity” together with the soul, this teaching “must be reaffirmed” in preaching and in catechesis. Practices such as scattering the ashes in nature can be a form of “pantheistic confessions, as if nature were a god,” Fr. Bonino said. Or it can express the false ideology “that after death nothing of the person remains, that the body just returns to the earth and there is nothing more.”

The new norms address these issues, he said, while also reacting against the idea that death is only about the individual or the immediate family. “Death also deals with the community to which the deceased belonged,” he pointed out.

The Vatican document highlighted several other reasons for the importance of the burial of the dead, including that the Church considers burying the dead to be one of the corporal works of mercy.

“From the earliest times, Christians have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Christian community’s prayers and remembrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflection,” it stated.

By reserving the ashes of the deceased in a sacred place, we can be assured that they are not excluded from the prayers of their family and the Christian community, it continued, as well as provide a more permanent marker for posterity, especially after the immediately subsequent generation has passed away.

“We are Catholics … and we must try to understand all elements of our life in the sense of the Christian faith,” Cardinal Müller said.

“We believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and also we have the hope for our resurrection of our body… And therefore the big tradition as Christians has always been burial.”

Herdsmen’s threat: Fayose asks Ekiti people to be ready for ‘war’

Herdsmen’s threat: Fayose asks Ekiti people to be ready for ‘war’

Wednesday, 26th October

Following the warning given by ‎the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigerian (MACBAN), an association of herdsmen in Nigeria, that the anti-grazing  activities of Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, may degenerate into an unquenchable inferno if not curtailed. Governor Fayose yesterday addressed a press conference in the state where he asked residents of the state, particularly those living in border towns to be ready for war with the herdsmen whom he described as 'Philistines'

“I am therefore using this opportunity to put Ekiti people, especially residents of border towns in the State on red alert. Ekiti people must be prepared to defend their land against these Philistines whose attributes and characters are extremism, violence, bloodshed and destruction.”

‎Read the full text from his press conference below:

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the umbrella body of herdsmen in Nigeria openly threatened to wage war against the government and people of Ekiti State, lying that four cattle belonging to its member were killed by the newly inaugurated Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshal (EGEM). Four days after this threat was issued against the government and people of Ekiti State by the Miyetti Allah, the federal government is yet to act in any manner that will disabuse the minds of Ekiti people, who believed that the federal government is in support of the threat.

The silence of the federal government has no doubt further confirmed the insinuation that there is plot to give tacit support to the herdsmen to invade some border towns and villages in Ekiti State and cause chaos in the State so as to justify the evil agenda of declaration of a state of emergency on the State.

Nigerians should be reminded that in May, this year, Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria said openly that the reason for the killing of over 1,000 people in Benue State was the killing of over 800 cattle by Tiv youths.

In other words, Miyetti Allah boldly told Nigerians that its members (herdsmen) killed over 1,000 Agatu people of Benue State because their cows were killed!

Up till today, no one has been arrested for the massacre in Agatu in Benue State and now, Ekiti State and its people are being threatened by this same Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, and the federal government has pretended as if nothing was wrong. From the words and antecedents of the Miyatti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, it is clear that they have assurance beyond their personal minds from the federal government to kill Nigerians in place of their cows. If not, by now, the man who signed that press statement, threatening the entire people of Ekiti State ought to have been arrested and questioned.

Therefore, in view of the above, we wish to tell Nigerians and the entire world that in the event of any invasion of Ekiti State by killer herdsmen, the federal government should be held responsible. The herdsmen and those urging them on should also be informed that any attack on one Ekiti person is an attack on all Ekitis and we shall not sit back and allow our people to be killed under the guise of cattle rearing.

In the event of federal government’s security agencies refusal to secure the lives and properties of Ekiti people, the people will have no option than to defend themselves. Our forefathers did same in the famous Kiriji War and we won’t mind doing the same now! I am therefore using this opportunity to put Ekiti people, especially residents of border towns in the State on red alert. Ekiti people must be prepared to defend their land against these Philistines whose attributes and characters are extremism, violence, bloodshed and destruction. For the avoidance of doubt, the Prohibition of Cattle and other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti State Bill, 2016 that was signed into law on August 29, 2016 remains in force.Nigeria is a federation and each State is empowered by law to make laws to protects its people.

Therefore, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria should rather tell its members to comply with this law by seeking from the government designated land for grazing ranch, which the government is always willing to give. Five cattle that were arrested last week are being kept in the government ranch and their owners can take them back as soon as the necessary fines are paid.

It is strange that the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria kept silent when its members killed two people and injured several others in Oke Ako in Ekiti State. So strange that the same Miyetti Allah that defended the murder of over 1,000 Agatu people of Benue State and kept silent when herdsmen killed over 100 people killed in Enugu State and a traditional ruler was killed in Delta State suddenly found its voice when Ekiti State government decided to curb the murderous activities of its men. Why didn’t Miyetti Allah that is now calling on President Mohammadu Buhari to warn me, the custodian of the mandate of Ekiti people warn its members when they were killing Nigerians and destroying farmlands? Are their cows more important than human lives?

To us in Ekiti, lives of 5,000 cows cannot be equated with those of human beings that are being killed daily by herdsmen across the country.

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria should know that cattle farmers are not different from other farmers. If they want to rear cows in Ekiti, they should do so in accordance with the laws of the State. After all, law prohibiting sale and consumption of alcohol was made in Kano State and the law is being enforced while Sharia Law made in some States in the north is also being enforced. We therefore want to appeal to all security agencies to be alive to their responsibility of protecting the lives of Nigerians and their properties.

However, the aspect of my job that gives me fulfilment is the immense support from my fans. I am grateful to everyone for believing in me. Indeed, you are the reason I push harder and want to be a better person. God bless you all.

You have not featured in any movie since you got married. Why?
I have not worked in any production after marriage because I have been busy in my primary duties as a wife and mother. I need adequate time to build a solid foundation for my family and for a sustainable home. And I hope to be back in no distant time.

As a married woman, would you accept any role that comes your way now?
As a married woman a lot of things change in your life. Of course, you must have some sense of responsibility in decision making, because it is not just about your life anymore, you have a family to take care of. So, for the respect I have for my head, who is my husband and my neck, who is my son, I can’t play certain roles anymore. And I don’t have any regrets because my family comes first in all I do.

How are you enjoying motherhood?
Surprisingly, I have embraced the role of motherhood with ease, grace and love. Motherhood is a learning process which I am developing each day. By the special grace of God, I must say I am a fantastic mother to my son.

What do you enjoy most being a mother and wife?
(Smiles) I am enjoying every bit of the experience. It has been a wonderful journey. To the glory of God I am thankful for the love I receive and also give. It is priceless. In fact, I am in love with my husband and son.

Could you share your labour room experience with us?
Oh! My labour room experience was beautiful. It was a wonderful experience and may God be praised for all His mercies and love.

You have a glowing skin, do you visit the spa?
Thank you dear. Yes. Regardless of my busy schedule, I do spend time pampering myself. I call it my ‘me time’ where it is all about pampering my skin.

Some of your fans say you have gained weight due to childbirth, are you considering losing it because of the kind of roles you play?
Definitely, it is expected that I add a few pounds because I just gave birth. So, it is imperative to work on losing some weight for myself and the big screen.

Some young mothers don’t like breastfeeding their babies exclusively because of the fear of losing that girlish look, what method would you prefer?
I strongly stand for breastfeeding. I always tell people I would love to breastfeed for a year because I know the benefits of breastfeeding. So, why should I deny my children their right? Although, some of our mothers may love to breastfeed their babies exclusively, due to health challenges, they find it difficult. However, all mothers are great!

What would be your advice to young mothers on breastfeeding?
Mothers and intending mothers should find time to read articles on breastfeeding. It is important to educate ourselves on care for our children so that they can live healthy lives.

What attracted you to your husband?
If you know my husband, it would be hard to pick out what you like most about him because he is such a sweetheart. But I appreciate his efforts in making me a better woman. He has given me so much security as a husband. Honestly, I haven’t had anyone stand by me or want to protect me the way he does. I must appreciate him for all his love. I love him dearly. That’s why I call him my ‘King Kong’.

There is a belief that marriage is a prison. How would you describe yours?
Marriage is a blessing! It’s a new phase and level in life. Marriage from my point of view is awesome if you marry the right person. It is hell if you marry the wrong person. You will hear different stories from different folks. For me, I am waxing stronger and happier in marriage.

Let me take you down memory lane. You lost your mum as a child, did you miss her presence during your marital rites and after the delivery of your baby?
Honestly, I miss my mum till date. It hasn’t been easy living without her, especially as life evolves; with marriage, kids and career. I miss her.

What is your advice to young ones in the industry?
They should stay smart, save and invest. It is easier and faster to spend money than making it. So, strive never to be a ‘has-been’ or ‘I get am before’ individual. It is advisable not to lose focus in search of fame. So, you must love your fans to succeed in your career because they can make or destroy you.

Don’t get married yet if you are a lady with the following problems

Don’t get married yet if you are a lady with the following problems.

Shakila Alivitsa: 17/10/2016

Enugu - You see the other day I was having a conversation with a love interest and he was telling me about all his escapades to the strip club (those stories men tell you before they find out you are a crazy person and are very comfortable with themselves).

He was telling me how most frequenters are married men and it is not because of what wives think but they just get so out of tune in their marriage; they just go to talk to someone- in the strip club!

He was telling me how he was also not ready for anything serious and of course I chimed in because I had to agree with myself. I am not ready for marriage. I am at that age where everyone is posting pregnancy/ labour/ birth picture on Facebook and wedding photos. But I really am not ready when I actually think about it. Guys, I am really, really young- trust me, I know. Even though the last article I read was saying I am old. My reasons are:

You are broke

There is a certain tale that when as young woman you cannot afford to pay your own bills, you should look into having it split with your better half. First it starts with living arrangement, before you know it, you will be on baby number three. Just like that. Then your husband is in the strip club while you try figure the kids on your own.

Don’t fall for that trap. Struggle alone and financially secure yourself- in my opinion. Getting into long term entanglements for short term fulfillment never ends well. Because you eventually find out you did for all the wrong reasons. Now you are miserable and are trying to figure out how to get out or live with it.

Everyone else is doing it and now you doubt if you are the problem

There is nothing wrong with you, if you are 28 and your 26 year old counterparts are posting on Facebook how they just had a wedding. If you are not ready, you are just not ready. Plain and simple. You can have more reasons but you are just not ready. Don’t rush to date anyone if you are still comfortable with your current situation. Don’t rush to marry someone you have dated for long but they have been a pain for the last year but because it makes sense. Don’t rush to get pregnant because you are trying to be in the right bracket- Janet is pregnant at 50, we are all alright.

Maybe you do not even have the wedding budget or the right man….that is what matters; for you to be comfortable. People will play with your head but if you do not know yourself, they will win.

Believe what your current situation says

If they say they are not serious, like this one here; believe them. Don’t try change someone’s mind, get a mistake moment or stick around to prove anything. They want to have fun, decide if that is what you want as well and act accordingly. Don’t play yourself. Don’t do it with the wrong person, you will regret it. I already know this one is a player and he already stresses me, why would I want him long term? Don’t beg for affection.

Can you really see a future with them?

Realistically and a good one? Not the one you make up from one side. Factor in their side as well; the missed phone calls, the excuses, this one asked me if I had left lipstick at his house- what does that tell you? A man can be a 10 in all the things that women want but if he is not that to you. It is not worth it, trust me! There are many, just like you found him you will find others.

On that note, let me go break up with someone and create a new line up.

Isi-Uzo communities cry out to Ugwuanyi

ISI-UZO COMMUNITIES CRY OUT TO UGWUANYI

— 12th October 2016

…We’re trapped because of abandoned Ebonyi Bridge project

From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha

The five communities that make up Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State have cried out to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to come to their rescue following the abandonment of the Ebonyi River Bridge at Ikem which rehabilitation was started by the former governor, Mr Sullivan Chime but was stopped half way about two years ago.
The people of the area who pleaded with Governor Ugwuanyi to complete the abandoned bridge project pointed out that it links the council headquarters that connects the entire council area, saying that the makeshift bridge presently constitutes a danger to road users.
They said that the project has been completely abandoned as the contractor has moved out of site with all the equipment and materials that he was using to execute the bridge project.
The people from the council area who spoke with Oriental News said that they were worried that the contractor handling the project had removed all equipment and materials from the site to another site in a nearby local government, expressing fears that the work may have been permanently abandoned by the state government.
The people, therefore, pleaded to the state government to make the contractor return to site and complete the project before the communities in the area are completely cut off from their neighbours.
A hanging bridge built shortly after the Nigeria/Biafra war had collapsed last year in the area, cutting off the communities until contributions by individuals from the area were made to fix a one-way emergency bridge that is now also on the verge of collapsing if an urgent measure was not taken to complete the already started concrete bridge that is about 70 per cent completion.
The Chairman of Isi-Uzo Progressives Forum (IPF), Chief Gabriel Nnaji, told Oriental News that the bridge had collapsed completely last year which brought sufferings, hardship and pains to the people before the now existing makeshift bridge was put in place.
“That makeshift bridge is once again showing signs of another collapse and we observed Governor Ugwuanyi’s kind attempt to complete the concrete span bridge but quickly withdrew, leading to the contractor’s total withdrawal from site with all equipment and materials.
“Our worry is that the contractor took the materials and equipment to a new site in a nearby local government, giving us the impression that the completion of a lasting Isi-Uzo bridge across Ebonyi River is not in near sight.
“We are also worried that there is no other state project going on in any other part of Isi-Uzo local government, yet this critical old project like the Ebonyi Bridge is stillborn.
“We are, therefore, appealing to the state government to make effort and return the contractor to site before the area is cut off again, which if it does, will bring about pain and increased feeling of marginalization among the good people of Isi-Uzo,” Nnaji said.
A lecturer at that Federal College of Education Ehamufu, Dr Chuks Nwadiogo lamented over the state of the bridge, urging the government to do the needful to enable the contractor return to site and complete the project because of the importance of the bridge to the people and other road users.
According to him, “some of us that go to school from Enugu use the road since Ehamufu-Nkalagu road has collapsed, so we now use Ikem, Neke road to Enugu and if the bridge finally collapses, we will be trapped because that is the only access road. The bridge needs urgent attention because of the pressure on that road. We plead with the state government since government is a continuum to bring back the contractor to ensure the completion of the concrete project”.
A staff of the local government, Mrs Uzoamka Ugwuodo also lamented over the hardship the workers have been subjected to since the hanging bridge collapsed, saying that not every vehicle could cross the makeshift bridge.
She said that the earlier the abandoned bridge is completed the better for the workers who use the road on a daily basis, saying “we always have fear that this small makeshift bridge will soon collapse and when it collapses that will be the end of work because we can’t fly to the office”.
A staff of the construction company who pleaded anonymity said that the firm deserves commendation for executing the job up to the level it did before demobilizing from site, stating that funding was a major problem inhibiting the completion of the project.
“Let me tell you that apart from the little mobilization fee that was given to us by the Sullivan government, we did not receive any other money; we used our money to get the job to the level it is now which is just remaining to cross the beams and the work will be over. We generated two certificates yet nothing was given to us,” he explained.
The staff also explained that the job they relocated to do at Udenu Local Government Area was not a direct job, but a sublet, stating that once the government releases money to the company, they would return to site to complete the bridge project.

Call for cabinet reshuffle: Buhari replies wife, says I’m more informed about governance..

Call for cabinet reshuffle: Buhari replies wife, says I’m more informed about governance ON OCTOBER 15, 2016.

I’ll not support you in 2019 if your cabinent is not rejigged — Aisha

•President was only joking— Presidency.

BY CHARLES KUMOLU, HENRY UMORU, BEN AGANDE, DAPO AKINREON, GBENGA OKE &OMEIZA AJAYI NIGERIANS.

Yesterday closed ranks in their condemnation of President Muhammadu Buhari over his statement to the effect that his wife,Mrs. Aisha Buhari, who lamented that the All Progressives Congress,APC-led Federal Government had been hijacked, lacked knowledge of the workings of his administration. Made up of women activists, party leaders, and socio-political organisations among others, the angry Nigerians did not take the President’s response lightly. In faulting the inability of the first family to be on the same page on the way the country is being governed, those who spoke to Saturday Vanguard and others, who aired their opinions on the social media said the development portends danger for the polity. They, however, urged President Buhari to heed his wife’s suggestion, noting that being the wife of the President placed her in a position to make informed statements. The development which indicated that the crisis in APC may have come to a head resulted in the  President and his wife disagreeing on call by the later for the restructuring of  the former’s cabinet  in order to put an end to claims of non-performance against his ministers. The wife of the President had in an interview with the BBC lamented that the crisis in the ruling party was provoked by the hijack of the party by those, who contributed nothing to its ascension to power. While Mrs. Buhari said a restructuring of the President’s team would assuage the anger of aggrieved party members, Buhari, while briefing newsmen in Germany, said his administration was succeeding. She said: “He is yet to tell me if he will seek re-election but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.” The President, however, said his knowledge of the workings of the government surpassed the understanding of his wife and the opposition. Those, who spoke to Vanguard include the Spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, Prof Dayo Adeyeye; a former Minster of Women Affairs, Mrs. Josephine Anenih; Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Muhammed; retired Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav; National Publicity Secretary of Pan-Yoruba socio-political organistaion,  Afefenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin;  Executive Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre,WARDC, Dr. Biola Akiyode- Afolabi; Acting National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mr. Timi Frank; former Secretary of  PDP in Benue State, Mr. Tertsea Gbise and Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos State, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, who made his position known on his Facebook page.

The statement has taken us backward—

Afolabi Reacting to the issue, Afolabi, a woman activist, said: ‘’The statement has actually taken us backward and I think it is an affirmation of his position on gender equality.  Such statement was not expected. The fact that he made the statement in Germany where he was beside a female President, made the statement very unfortunate.  It was indeed an unfortunate statement. There is a need for Nigerian women to reaffirm themselves beyond the stereotyping of their position in the society. The wife’s statement which he responded to showed that the role of women goes beyond the kitchen. ‘’He has drawn us back to ancient days. With the wave around the world including Germany with a female leadership and the US which is preparing for another, the President has only spoken his mind. Unfortunately, this cannot be tolerated in this generation. We will join his wife to resist any second attempt to introduce patriarchy except he retracts the statement. His statement is condemnable.”

We are stunned

Anenih Similarly, Anenih said: “The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot belong to his kitchen. When we first read it we were stunned. Then we did not believe he could have said it. But watching him on a video we cannot believe that the gentleman who promised to take Nigerian women higher in public service was serious about what he was saying. If he meant it, then he is definitely on his own because Nigerian women will kick hard against it. “I think he was trying to make light and downplay the seriousness and import of Mrs. Aisha Buhari’s BBC interview. Unfortunately, he came out with the wrong words. The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot belong to his kitchen. “ President’s statement is scandalous—Junaid Muhammed On his part, Junaid Muhammed said: ‘’ Mrs. Buhari has just stated what is obvious to everybody but Buhari’s reaction to the interview is scandalous. The statement by Buhari that she belongs to the kitchen is scandalous and for any man to think at this age and time that women are only meant for the kitchen, is a very bad thinking. “I think the person that asked Mr. President to react has done him a great disservice and for him to say such a thing when he was beside one of the most powerful women in the world was wrong.”

Aisha Buhari was right—

Tsav Commenting, Tsav said: ‘’The response is very unfortunate because the President and his wife are not supposed to disagree in public. But she was actually telling him the truth that those, who helped the party, had been left out. The advice is very useful but she should not have made that known to the public. The wife should talk less and not constitute an opposition to the president. She can advice him privately but not in the public.” Adeyeye said: “What Aisha said is not worth responding to because she was talking to her husband.”

There is a power struggle—

Afenifere Odumakin said: “It is a weighty statement from someone that cannot by any stretch of imagination be among the “wailing wailers”.It shows that there is some crack within which may be unhealthy for the polity. It was definitely prompted by unhealthy power play in the seat of power but our concern is about the direction our country is headed.”

I stand with Aisha Buhari—Igbokwe Igbokwe said:

‘’ I stand with Aisha Buhari on her BBC interview 120 percent. Nancy Reagan, the wife of a former President of the United States,  Ronald Reagan was once asked by the press why she is so powerful and unimaginably influential. She told them she was powerful and influential because she sleeps with the most powerful President on earth. Aisha Buhari is with Africa’s most powerful President. She is an amazing beauty, very educated and can hold her head high anywhere in the world. She is influential and focused. President Buhari must listen to her and do the needful. This great woman is doing what any sensible wife and mother can do when there is a need to do so and even at a time like this. President Buhari needs our support including that of his jewel of inestimable value, Aisha.”

Buhari should consider  cabinet reshuffle a must—

Timi Frank On his part, Timi Frank said: ‘’I think Mrs. Buhari deserve commendation because she was actually speaking the minds of not only the party members but Nigerians. “What Mrs. Buhari has said is not different from what some of us have been saying that it is high time the President restructured his cabinet and bring in people who understand the manifestoe of the party and could help deliver on its change mantra, especially, the economy of the country which needs urgent attention.

Aisha Buhari’s interview with BBC: We only knew Fashola, Amaechi, few others

Aisha Buhari’s interview with BBC: We only knew Fashola, Amaechi, few others
ON OCTOBER 15, 2016.

BBC Hausa: It has been One and a half years since President Muhammadu Buhari came into power, a lot of people are expressing their unhappiness over the way few acquaintance of the President have hijacked power while neglecting people that work for his success. Like we have promised, here is how the interview with Aisha Buhari and Naziru Maka’ilu from Abuja goes.

BBC Hausa: People have goodwill towards President Muhammadu Buhari, especially looking at the things he did before, but since coming into power things have not been working the way they should, what do you thing is the cause?

Aisha Buhari: I am not a government official, but in my opinion as a woman, a mother, what I think is it is well known that the first 4 years are not going to be easy. Firstly, it was people that brought the government into power. More than half of those people are not appointed into the government. Some people that are not politicians, not professionals were brought into the government. They don’t even know what we said we want and what we don’t during the campaign. They even come out and say to people we are not politicians, but they are occupying the offices meant for politicians. Some have parted with their wives, some lost their children lost, some women too have parted with their husbands because of politics, a lot happened during the time. The way things are going I too I am not happy. We are just starting, we have not finished. Some people that worked for the government have been appointed. But those heading government agencies you can find one fighting his state governor, they contested together during election one in APC while in PDP.

BBC Hausa: Who are those doing these kinds of things?

Aisha Buhari: Everybody knows them. Those people should know that people voted singly. Even Buhari too had one vote. Nobody voted 5 times. 15.429 Million People. That one that people are thinking too, he had only some 2 or 3 people. I am pleading to them to have the people at heart and embrace everybody so that we can all move together. Not even now in 2016 or 17, lot of people are creating divisions within the APC, which is our source of concern. They think they have worked for the government while those appointed some of them had no voter’s card. What I fear is uprising of 15.4 million people.

BBC Hausa: Is the President aware some people are subverting his government?

Aisha Buhari: Whether he knows or he do not, those that voted for him knows.

BBC Hausa: But you are the most closest to him, did you tell him?

Aisha Buhari: There is nothing I can tell him, he is seeing things himself. Out of the people he has appointed, take 50, 45 of them I don’t know them. Perhaps he doesn’t know them too. I have been living with him for 27 years.

BBC Hausa: Do you think there are some people that are dictating to the President things to do, not him?

Aisha Buhari: That is what I am saying, those that know they don’t have voters card, they should give chance to those that have, they are the ones that struggled and knows what we want to do. Some of them if you go to a meeting with them they will tell you, we are not politicians, if somebody is wise, they will not accept to take any political office. They didn’t even work for it. Even if you are asked to, you should say it is not my profession. Those places not headed by politicians will cause people discontent.

BBC Hausa: One would wonder to hear you say some people have hijacked the government without him knowing, but who do you think are those people?

Aisha Buhari: I don’t know them, I don’t know them. I don’t know them

BBC Hausa: But some people are calling names, saying 2 or 3 are the ones, do you that as well?

Aisha Buhari: Yes I agree. Because of those appointed apart from Fashola, Ameachi and some others, not much, I don’t know them, most of us too don’t know them, and he too does not know them

BBC Hausa: One would wonder that Buhari is not the one charge knowing him as a person who had leadership experiences, people would not believe

Aisha Buhari: Yes, it is surprising; nobody thought it is going to be like this. But now that it is so…sometimes when one is doing something wrong without him knowing, but when people talk to them, they should listen. Because in the future, whether he is going to contest or not, it is that same people that would vote for APC. We hope those people don’t come back, and everybody don’t hope so too

BBC Hausa: You said “Whether he is going to contest in the future or not”, has he disclose it to you whether he is standing or not?

Aisha Buhari: He didn’t tell me, but I have made up my mind.

More Chibok girls to regain freedom soon, says Buhari

More Chibok girls to regain freedom soon, says Buhari ON OCTOBER 15, 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism on the release of more of the kidnapped Chibok girls, after 21 of them were freed by Boko Haram, following more than two years of captivity. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.  Speaking at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday in Berlin, President Buhari said negotiations will continue until all the girls secure their freedom.  “On the Chibok girls, we have been able to secure the release of 21 of them, so over 100 more are still in the hands of the terrorists somewhere in the Lake Chad Basin area which include Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.   “In getting this 21 out, we hope we will get enough intelligence to go about securing the rest of them.  “We are very grateful to the UN for their participation in trying to secure the release of these girls.  “Please don’t forget that as a result of terrorism in Nigeria, no fewer than 37,000 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram.  “Right now we have about two million people in IDP camps, 60 per cent of them are women and children and 60 per cent of those children are orphaned.  “This is a major challenge for government; we have to provide  infrastructure especially for education and health, take them back to their villages and towns and reintegrate them so that they can have normal life,’’ he said.  The President thanked the German government for their humanitarian assistance and support for Nigeria in dealing with the effects of terrorism.  Responding to a question on the BBC interview with his wife, Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, the President said his wife and the opposition needed to appreciate the depth of the problems he met on the ground.  He caused laughter at the press conference when he jokingly said: “I claim superior knowledge compared to her and the opposition,’’ referring to his three attempts at the polls to become President of Nigeria over a 12-year period, succeeding in the fourth attempt.  Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the president on the media, wondered why there was a negative reaction over the president’s earlier remark about his wife:  “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.” Shehu said the President Buhari was merely  joking. “My friends, can’t a leader get a sense of humour anymore? Mr President laughed before that statement was made. He was obviously throwing a banter,”he said. “Mr President respects the place of women in our society. He believes in the abilities of women. Politics sometimes should be spiced with humour. Those of us around him know there is never a dull moment with him. One of Nigeria’s most sensitive office today is headed by a woman, Mrs Adeosun. This is an evidence of the confidence he reposes on wome, ” Garba added.

Many reasons Buhari should change style – Opara, Ex- Deputy Speaker ON OCTOBER 14, 2016.

Many reasons Buhari should change style – Opara, Ex- Deputy Speaker.

OCTOBER 14, 2016..

By Ben Agande Former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Sir Austin Opara speaks on a wide range of issues. While condemning the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region, the former deputy speaker, however, blames the issue on the skewed appointments made by this government, which he says are “provocative.” Excerpts. Over one year into office, how would you compare the All Progressive Congress government and the sixteen years of the Peoples Democratic Party? It is very clear to everybody. The situation is worse than it has ever been in the country in all sectors. We are using the recession as a blanket phrase to describe the situation. Going to the grassroots, the situation is precarious and pitiable. There is no foodstuff, workers salaries are not being paid, the price of fuel is beyond reach, electricity supply is terrible, the exchange rate has skyrocketed. There is crisis in virtually all sectors of the economy. We need expert intervention as well as divine intervention to save this nation from total collapse. But it has been argued that the poor foundation laid by your party is responsible for what we are going through now. Austin Opara That does not make sense to me, except for a government that is unserious and is keen on making excuses. When President Barack Obama took over in the United States of America, the American economy was in crisis as left by President George Bush. War against  corruption Obama never spent time blaming President Bush but took on the challenge. We have elected a government because they told Nigerians that the PDP government was not performing. To turn around to blame their failings on the PDP government is no longer excusable. For a president who had contested election four times, the least Nigerians expect from him is to have a plan on how he is going to do things differently. For him to turn around to blame others for his failing is very unfortunate. But it is agreed that the president has made much progress in the fight against corruption. It has come out clearly that even the war against corruption is skewed against a few people and I will give you examples. In Rivers State, so much has been presented against the past government but nobody has said anything but this government goes after people whom they don’t even have evidence against. It is a clear indication that this government only goes after its opponents in the so-called war against corruption. The precarious state of the economy has made the government consider selling some national assets. Do you support this? For me, something must give in at this point. I disagree with the sale of the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas because, in the past several months, it has paid dividends of over $4 billion which was shared amongst the three tiers of government. To that extent, the NLNG is a productive and viable entity. But divesting government interests in some of the assets is necessary, especially those that have continued to constitute liabilities to the country. One good example is the JVC with the oil companies where Nigeria holds about 54% shares. There is nothing wrong with divesting say 4%. But the important thing is to ensure that in doing this, the government must ensure that the beneficiaries of such policies are Nigerians. To get us out of recession now, there must be some short term measures, including borrowing. But there must be a cocktail of opportunities that government must bring to bear. It must inject money into the system in the short term. What is your reaction to the chain of events in the House of Representatives that culminated in the suspension of a member for one year? It is unfortunate that a member of the House, former chairman of a prominent committee will speak in the manner that he did, denigrating the parliament because he lost out. I don’t understand what he is talking about padding or no padding. As a parliament, you have the right to adjust the budget in a manner that would be for the total good of the nation. Section 4 of the Constitution says the Parliament should make laws for the good governance so if an adjustment is done to ensure good governance, what is wrong with that? It is only when such adjustment is done out of selfish reasons that you can say there is a problem. My take on the crisis is that the former chairman of the Appropriation Committee was wrong in his approach. The speaker or any member of the parliament can introduce projects to the budget, but the problem again is the approach. Some of the projects they may introduce may not be federal government project. Yes, while it may not be outrageous to amend the budget or introduce new projects, this must be done in liaison with the relevant agency that may execute such projects. But for a member of the House to speak in the way the former chairman of appropriations committee spoke, it shows that he is just bent on pulling down the system. The institution is bigger than any individual. The fact that you have fallen out of favour does not mean that the institution should be destroyed. What is your reaction to the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta region? We have condemned this. A lot of us have spoken out against this because ultimately, we from the region would be the loser. The degradation of the environment, the loss of revenue to our state and local government and other issues. We keep talking to those who say they are aggrieved or unhappy because we believe there are better ways of going about the problems. Let the destruction of pipelines stop in the interest of our people and the nation. But it is also necessary to put it on record that this government, in all that it has done, including appointments that have been skewed in favour of a section of this country, has been provocative. The government should look inward and address the style of governance. This is not the first government we have had in this country. It is important that the government should look inward and readdress a lot of issues, especially that of appointments. The appointments so far made are skewed, and it is very provocative. What are the lessons to be learned from the recent governorship election in Edo State? The fact that has come out of the Edo election is that 2019 will not be business as usual. It will not be like the previous elections. Both the government and the governed should know that 2019 will be different. I congratulate PDP members in Edo state for their performance. We have been told that the unit by unit results that the party agents indicated that PDP won the election. We will leave that for the tribunals to decide but the fact is that for a state that it does not have a government yet they performed so creditably, they deserve commendation and it is an indication of what will happen in 2019.

The money will be  used as part of what we have being dong so far, I would not be letting out the secret  if I tell you that money that was taking from the account of NBC into the EFCC recovery account,” he said. Kawu, who expressed optimism on the ability of Nigeria to meet the June 2017 deadline, assured that the country would achieve the set goal. His words: “I am optimistic that we are going to achieve the 2016 digital switch over deadline. ‘’Three weeks ago, the President was in United Nations when he met the captains of American industry, he did say something that Nigeria was willing  to use digital revolution as a major starting point for kick starting a revolutional approach to employment in our country, that includes digital broadcasting. “So  at the very top level, the President and the people around him, understand that this is a very important process that we need to achieve.” Meanwhile, the NBC DG said the forthcoming 2016 AFRICAST was expected to bring together broadcasting experts and entrepreneurs from across the continent to be part of broadcast place of ideas. “Over the years, this event has taken a life of its own and become destination for everybody that operates in the broadcasting industry. “This time, it will take a more interesting tone because we are talking about digitization. We are opening an aperture in the way Africans    watch television and we at the NBC are at the course of history in this digitization project.” “There are plans on ground to make it a yearly activity instead of  the current biennial. we want Afriast to be a permanent industry activity on the global calendar. We also expect stronger and more visible-buy in into the AFRICAST, by the industry. “We are thinking about a new future for AFTICAST, we plan to make it bigger and better. It will feature top quality signal, cutting edge broadcast equipments. Participants and exhibitors will find AFRICAST as very useful platform for networking opportunities,” he added. Speaking on the financial benefit to Nigeria, he said “sometime when we talk about the benefit that Nigeria is expecting from the programme. However, sometimes, you don’t quantify everything in terms of Naira and kobo. If you are looking for bottom line every time, you might miss the critical point.” Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on March 3, 2016, recovered N10,061,172,600 from the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, being alleged inflation of collateral funds meant for Digital Set-Top -Boxes.

Rohr suspends celebration

FROM GEORGE ALUO, NDOLA

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has heaped praises on his wards, following their 2-1 away win against Zambia’s Chipolopolo at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ngola, Zambia in the Group B opening match of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier, but was quick to say the team would not celebrate yet.

Rohr, who had his first real test with the match against Zambia, told members of the media at the post match conference that he is glad the Eagles played as a unit. “My boys fought like wounded lions and won as a team. The entire team played like a unit from the goalkeeping area down to the attack.”

He gave special thumbs up to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme whose saves helped the team a lot.

“This win calls for celebration but it is too early for that now because this is just the beginning of this campaign. We would save the celebrations as we shift our focus on our next game against Algeria.

He thanked the Zambian fans for being very friendly and cheering the Eagles out of the stadium.

Zambian coach on his part said they are building a new team and urged his countrymen to be patient.

Super Eagles captain, Mikel gave kudos to the young lads in the team, Iheanacho and Iwobi. He said they are talented and ready to go places.

Goals from Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho ensured Nigeria won in their World Cup qualifier against Zambia on Sunday.

The two 20-year-old strikers scored in the opening half with the Zambian President, Edgar Lungu among those in attendance.

Iwobi had pounced on a weak headed clearance and slammed the ball past goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene from close range in the 32nd minute  while a neat one-touch passing set-up Iheanacho 10 minutes later and he rounded Mweene before calmly slotting the ball into the net just before half-time.

Zambia dominated the second period, and a blunder from Nigeria defender, Kenneth Omeruo allowed veteran striker Collins Mbesuma to set up a tense finish when he pulled a goal back with 19 minutes left.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick said: “We commend the efforts of the players and the technical crew, and we thank the Honourable Minister of Sports for his words of encouragement before the match. We are happy with the three points but it is a marathon, not a sprint.

“We still have five matches to play. We will take it one match at a time. Next stop is ‘Operation Beat Algeria.”

FG, World Bank seal $1.3bn SMEs deal

— 10th October 2016

The Federal Government at the weekend reached an agreement with the World Bank Group and other development partners for the release of about $1.3billion for the funding of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the planned takeoff of the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN).

Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, who broke the news at a post event press briefing in Washington DC, USA, stated that upon commencement, the Development Bank of Nigeria would serve as a conduit for government intervention in SMEs and medium sized enterprises as part of efforts to achieve inclusive growth.

Nigerian SMEs account for over 50 per cent of the country’s GDP, but have often been starved of funds due to inappropriate allocation mechanism that involve commercial banks and other stakeholders that are not genuinely committed to their growth.

Adeosun said that with the latest agreement with development partners, efforts are now being geared towards recruiting the key management staff of the bank to enable it commence full operation.

She said, “Agreement was also reached on the final steps for the take off of the Development Bank of Nigeria which had been stopped due to some issues. We have resolved all those issues and the recruitment process has now been finalised with management team put in place.

“This will release $1.3 billion which would be used to support our SMEs  which are part of the engine that will spur the growth of our economy. With this development,  SME lending at low rates will now be facilitated through the DBN and we are ready to resolve the outstanding issues,” she added.

The minister also said that the Nigerian team got the commitment of global partners including the U.S, United Kingdom, Canada and the World Group to assist the country repatriate  illegal financials flows out of Nigeria back into the country to support the financing of critical infrastructures and economic empowerment programmes of the administration.

“We had a number of specific bilateral meetings with UK Department for International Development, the US treasury and other partners and pbased on the need to reverse the trend of illegal financial flows out of Nigeria,” said Adeosun. “We have agreed on a number of initiatives to achieve significant repatriation of monies illegally taken out of the country. These include monies that have been taken by way of illegal tax repatriation, tax avoidance as well as those illegally stolen by past government officials,” she added.

She however said that details of the agreement on repatriation of illicit financial flows would be made public after she had brief President Buhari on the matter.

Meanwhile, the minister said the Nigerian government delegation also held high a level discussion on the challenges in the power sector, largely bother on financial limitations, stressing that government has agreed to hold a workshop in Abuja in November 2016 with the World Bank Group, IFC, Multilateral Investment Credit Guarantee Agency (MIGA) which provided partial risk guarantees the Ministries of Power,  Finance the Central Bank CBN, NNPC for the gas perspective, the GENCOs, DISCOs all the stakeholders in the power sector. She said the World Bank Group would be bringing its specialist power finance team to see how they can proffer financial solutions to the challenges of nigeria’s power sector. She stated that work on the proposed $1billion Eurobond has been concluded and that the Federal Government would soon appoint the various parties ahead of its formal launch.

Other high level meetings attended by the nigerian team included one with JICA, the Japan international cooperation agency and we secured their commitment to facilitate trade and investment in Nigeria, specifically they have agreed to make investments in agriculture, fisheries sector and we have made progress on the Jebba hydro projects which is also a power project.

“Our constituency which represents South Africa, Nigeria and Angola had a meeting here and we reviewed the fact that the allocation to our constituency are among the poorest particularly from the IFC is unacceptably low. So  what we have agreed to do is that we will be hosting a meeting in Abuja in March for the three finance ministers and the idea is that we will benchmark and scale up our technical capacity to ensure that we are able to get more of what is available for the three countries. We also secured commitments from the Canadian ministry of finance to support us for roads and the they have successfully developed a PPP platform for road investment and they have offered to support us on the technical front in that regard.

The delegation also presented the family home fund which our affordable housing project to a number of prospective investors and development partners including the world bank, IFC, MIGA and the Islamic Development Bank, we’ve already received indicative interest and we’ll be coming back to tie up those funding commitments.

I’m We plan and have agreed technical support in the area of domestic revenue mobilization and we’re going to make more use of the IMF’s online training in financial management, we will be incentivizing our staff who are interested in taking these courses to do so.

Also speaking at the briefing Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele restated commitment of the bank to  fine tune the flexible exchange rate to meet the needs of the business community. “ But what we only have to talk about is fine-tuning few aspects of it, in terms of the implementation of the content of that document. That is why I said we would from time to time, continue to look at it. As we are looking at it, I repeat, we would see how we would continue to fine tune it, to the extent that whatever we are putting in place would be such that would benefit Nigerians, improve their lives as well as the country.”
